FAA allocates $31M to airport rehabilitation

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently awarded nine airports more than $31 million in combined grants to expand their cargo infrastructures in an effort to boost the U.S. supply chain. The airports receiving awards are: Chicago Rockford (RFD) , Flint Bishop International (FNT), Greenville-Spartanburg International (GSP) , Huntsville International (HSV), Rhode Island T.F. Green (PVD), Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA), Stockton Metropolitan (SCK), Ted Stevens Anchorage (ANC) and Toledo Express (TOL). They will be funded through the government’s Airport Improvement Program to construct and improve facilities, repair runways and taxiways, maintain airfield elements and purchase operational equipment, according to an Oct. 12 FAA release. [caption id="attachment_57132203" align="alignright" width="353"] Photo / Chicago Rockford International Airport[/caption] The funding, “will make improvements at airports across our country so they can handle cargo more efficiently and help strengthen America’s supply chains,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in the release. ANC will receive $8.1 million to reconstruct its taxi lane and rehabilitate the apron; RFD will receive $6.7 million to construct a 4,267-foot taxiway and increase access to the south cargo apron with connectors; HSV will receive $5.6 million to rehabilitate its cargo apron and expand airport access roads; GSP will receive $4.5 million to rehabilitate its taxiway and cargo apron pavement; FNT will receive $2.3 million to rehabilitate its cargo apron pavement and perform crack repairs and joint sealing on the apron surface; SEA will receive $1.9 million to reconstruct its cargo apron pavement; TOL will receive $1.07 million to rehabilitate its cargo apron pavement and implement design improvements to its taxiway safety area; SCK will receive $417,036 to rehabilitate its cargo taxilane pavement; and PVD will receive $197,310 to design a new cargo apron. ANC and SEA are known cargo hubs, with 3.5 million and 498,741 tonnes of cargo throughput for 2021, respectively. The other airports are seeing rising cargo activity as congestion at hubs increases wait times. E-commerce and express shippers are also to thank for the airports’ growth. See also : Ongoing US congestion encourages smaller airports to tap cargo potential RFD saw a 25% increase in volume throughput in 2021, with growing operations from UPS and Amazon Air. Maersk-owned Senator International flies out of both RFD and GSP, and GSP sees operations from UPS and FedEx additionally. TOL experienced record growth as well, moving 14,968 tonnes in 2021, up 438% from 2020, with daily flights for Amazon. Amazon Air also operates flights to SCK. FNT sees flights from FedEx and has a FedEx and FedEx ground on site, with a total throughput of around 5,920 tonnes. HSV, servicing North Alabama, saw 88,769 tonnes of cargo in 2019, with significant service from DSV and Kerry Logistics’ freighter networks. Canada’s government similarly invested in airport infrastructure , also seeing a growing need for supply chain improvement within the country.
