Western Sydney International preps for launch of 737-800BCF, A321P2F ops this month

Western Sydney International Airport is set to host 737-800BCFs and A321P2Fs when it launches 24-hour cargo operations July 26. With the opening of Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) for cargo operations, the airport expects to see supply chains evolve significantly over the coming years to refocus the freight ecosystem back into Sydney-centric operations, a WSI spokesperson told Cargo Facts . (Courtesy/Western Sydney International Airport)[/caption] Geographically, Sydney is the logical logistics hub for both domestic and international freight, the spokesperson said. WSI is approximately 50 kilometers west of Sydney Airport (SYD), which is approximately 10 km south of the city and served by widebody-freighter operators such as FedEx, UPS, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Tasman Cargo Airlines. The most recent operator to commit to WSI is Texel Air Australasia, the New Zealand-based subsidiary of Chisholm Enterprises. The carrier will base one of its six 737-800BCFs at WSI for charter operations, George Chisholm, chief executive of Chisholm Enterprises, told Cargo Facts . With the repositioning of that aircraft, Texel Air Australasia will have aircraft positioned at Brisbane (BNE), Perth (PER), Darwin (DRW), Adelaide (ADL) and WSI. Chisholm said these sites give it, “one of the broadest spreads of dedicated narrowbody freighter capacity across Australia,” as well as access to an operating environment without the curfew between 23:00 and 06:00 that SYD enforces. Texel Air Australasia launched in 2023 and operates a large part of its fleet in ACMI service for Team Global Express . The other freighter operator that will serve WSI once it opens is Australian carrier Qantas, which has six A321-200P2Fs and told Cargo Facts in 2025 that it had pushed further fleet growth to coincide with WSI’s opening. The airport’s cargo precinct is 90% leased and should see up to 220,000 tonnes of throughput in its first year, the WSI spokesperson said. Menzies Aviation and dnata also have signed up as launch tenants. Flexible hub The cargo precinct’s 24-hour operations will allow for flexible departures, enabling domestic and international freighters to land any time of day, allowing freight forwarders to dispatch high-value and perishable products to their end customers anywhere within Australia, Asia or the Pacific region, the WSI spokesperson said. This flexibility will especially benefit Australia’s most lucrative exports, which include meat and seafood moving along lanes to New Zealand and Singapore, the spokesperson said. WSI anticipates cargo throughput of up to 293,800 tonnes by 2030 and 546,700 tonnes by 2045, according to the airport’s master plan. “WSI will become — and remain — the largest gateway for domestic and international cargo in Australia,” the airport said in the document. According to its master plan, the airport does not anticipate expanding any of its cargo facilities within the first five years but plans to expand its initial cargo building and construct an additional cargo facility within twenty years. The extent and timing of these developments will be driven by demand, the airport said in its master plan.
