Cainiao trials IATA’s ONE Record system successfully

Alibaba Group Holding subsidiary Cain iao Smart Logistics announced its successful trial of IATA’s digital e-freight system ONE Record this week. [caption id="attachment_98763" align="alignright" width="229"] Photo courtesy of Qatar Airways Cargo[/caption] The Hangzhou, China-based company said it used the technology during its Hangzhou International Airport (HGH)-to-Liege Airport (LGG) route, according to a press release by Cainiao. The move comes at a time when ONE Record is garnering more traction following IATA’s announcement last month that it set a deadline of Jan. 1, 2026 , for all of its members —300 carriers — to adopt the program. IATA has agreements for ONE Record data sharing with 39 organizations, per its website. Bringing operators together ONE Record technology was introduced in 2018 to bring logistics partners together to track and share data about shipments. Lufthansa Cargo and CHAMP Cargosystems adopted the technology this month. “We managed to develop the ONE Record set of standards and then finally achieve an agreement that we want to make [it] the single airline standard for which airlines will be capable by the first of January 2026,” Brendan Sullivan , global head of cargo at IATA told Air Cargo Next during the World Cargo Symposium in April. “That required us to make sure that all the standards were there and in place and a roadmap made sense and was logical and is something that the airlines could ultimately endorse working with the forwarders.” The system allowed Cainiao to implement its first application of radio frequency identification technology, which automatically and in real time pushes the cargo status of four transportation nodes —seaports, highways, railways and air terminals — to ONE Record. “This eliminates the reliance on traditional phone and email communication and enables information exchange between IoT data and industry data ,” the release states. “Cainiao has also simultaneously implemented the trial at both ends of the air route and is the first to be able to transmit key node data for single pieces of cargo.” Efficient and transparent Enhanced visibility and transparency of shipment data between all operators using a single record view will significantly improve operations, Sullivan said. “[This will] involve making sure that the standards are available, that they’re harmonized and multimodal and that we have a pathway for the various actors Sullivan said. ““There is a very different pathway, for example, for customs authorities versus airlines. And, so, we will make sure that we are working with those parties.” While these technologies have been crucial for industry growth, there are still challenges ahead, and it will take time for full implementation, several industry leaders previously told Air Cargo Next . However, ONE Record is a potential solution to bring everyone to the same page, Sullivan said. “Data is crucial to our industry’s success, but we have been hindered by outdated data formats and legacy infrastructure for too long,” said Ashwin Bhat , chief executive of Lufthansa Cargo, said in a news release this month. “ONE Record has the potential to revolutionize the way we share information. It opens the door for a fundamental production optimization based on high-quality data sharing.”
