CEVA launches airfreight network of own-controlled capacity

CEVA Logistics today officially launched two new services for its airfreight customers . The company’s new “ Skycapacity ” program guarantees air cargo capacity for the freight forwarder’s customers on dozens of weekly intercontinental flights, while the Time Critical Solution offers priority designation on emergency and rush shipments , with a money-back guarantee on the airfreight component if the shipment does not meet the contractual timeframe. [caption id="attachment_95357" align="alignright" width="300"] Photo courtesy of CEVA Logistics[/caption] “We believe looking to the market that it will not change in 2021, probably also not in the first two quarters of 2022,” Peter Penseel , CEVA’s COO of a ir f reight, told Air Cargo World . “ T o make sure that we can deliver the services that we are selling to our customers we need to have more of what we call own ed, controlled capacity. That means aircraft for CEVA to use to serve the customers on specific lanes and we have that in place now.” The Sky ca pacity service consists of fully chartered fre ighters or passenger freighters connecting North and South America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions , Penseel said, adding that the recent launch of a new cargo airline by its parent company CMA CGM is unrelated to the new charter network but will benefit its connectivity. “The positive thing for us is that our mother company bought those assets and created the schedule into North America, where we also now are buying capacity from them to extend our Skycapacity offering,” Penseel said. Skycapacity will offer several connections from Europe and Asia into the Americas . According to Penseel , CEVA is close to securing deal s for direct flight s into Latin America from Asia and Europe. The capacity is badly needed in the region , as CEVA’s VP Air Latin America Marcio Pires told Air Cargo World . “Latin America, when you look at the questions related to the passenger flights, we are much more dependent pre-pandemic on that kind of flights,” Pires said. “Yes, we have countries like Colombia or Ecuador that have a huge demand [for] freighters for the flower business and so on, but for the other countries , it is much more related to the passenger belly capacity , ” which is no longer available. Skycapacity will also serve both the trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic markets into North America. “Trans-Pac we will operate from China and Korea into America, and from Europe we will operate usually with passenger freighters but of course the main supplier will be CMA CGM Air Cargo with their flights to Chicago, New York and Atlanta,” Penseel said. The second newly added service targets time-critical airfreight shipments, which the 3PL says is well-suited for shippers in healthcare, automotive, aerospace and manufacturing. The service is an upscaling and rebranding of earlier time-related products offered by CEVA, Penseel said, and marks a move away from a focus on charters or partial charters toward very targeted shipments that will cover the forwarder’s entire airfreight network . Penseel said t he service guarantees are intended to demonstrate that CEVA is “willing to take that risk by saying we are even willing to give your money back on the airport-to-airport components if we don’t deliver wh at we agreed, because we have specific trained people with specific knowledge to handle that kind of business.”
