Nippon Express begins OST-JFK cargo charter with Qatar Airways

Nippon Express Belgium, a local subsidiary of Japan-based forwarder Nippon Express Co. Ltd., launched a round-trip charter service between Ostend-Bruges International Airport (OST) and New York (JFK) on May 8 using a Qatar Airways-operated 777-300ER passenger freighter. Ltd.[/caption] Nippon Express launched the weekly charter due to customer demand and capacity issues from Europe to the U.S., Sekiya Tomonori, public relations and advertising division manager at Nippon Express, told Air Cargo World. Due to the reduced number of passenger flights on the trans-Atlantic lane, Nippon Express decided to launch its own charter, said Tomonori, noting that the route will be transporting general cargo from a variety of industries. The charter agreement is also meant to help strengthen European import and export gateway functions, according to a May 27 Nippon Express statement, and all services from departure to arrival will be carried out by the carrier. Prior to the OST-JFK charter, Nippon Express Belgium started air cargo import and export operations in the Liege area through the April 16 launch of a round-trip charter service between Liege (LGG) and Narita airports (NRT) to encourage import and export gateway functions in Europe, according to the statement. Nippon Express is the first Japanese freight forwarder to establish operations in the Liege area, according to the statement, and also recently opened an office in the airport cargo zone for container freight station functions. Japan-based global logistics services company Nippon Express Co., established in 1937, currently has a network that spans 48 countries in 726 locations, according to its website. The company’s air cargo operations support a variety of industries, including pharma, aerospace and aviation, food, fashion and automotive. Nippon Express was ranked at No. 7 in Air Cargo World’s recent Power 25 ranking of the world’s top airfreight forwarders, based on 2019 airfreight tonnage.
