Cathay facing cargo disruptions from Super Typhoon Meranti

The Hong Kong-based carrier Cathay Pacific Cargo canceled flights and delayed others as Super Typhoon Meranti bore down on the Chinese mainland yesterday, after punishing the island of Hong Kong, wreaking havoc throughout the region’s transportation sector. The storm dumped about 800 millimeters of rainfall in one day on mainland China, submerging roads and temporarily closing airports.

As the storm moved on, it left behind extensive damage. A Xiamen Airlines hangar in Xiamen, China, had its doors ripped off by the wind, and 757s were pushed around the runway.

Many domestic flights were canceled, including all of those from Kaohsiung airport. Cathay Pacific Airways canceled its subsidiary Dragonair’s flights from Hong Kong to Kaohsiung — KA452, KA432, KA442 and KA436 – and flights from Kaohsiung to Hong Kong – KA453, KA433, KA443 and KA437 – on Wednesday.

By midnight, local time, on Thursday, most departures from Taipei Songshan Airport (TSA) and Taoyuan Airport Taiwan (TPE) were back on schedule.
