Aeromexico Cargo increases Asia-Pacific connectivity with WUH-MEX route

Mexico City-based Aeromexico Cargo launched a twice-weekly cargo-only service between the Wuhan-Tianhe International Airport (WUH) and Mexico City International Airport (MEX) on Saturday. The route will be operated with a 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, which has a load capacity of more than 30 tonnes, according to a statement released by the carrier yesterday. During the past few months, Aeromexico has had operations at other major airports in China, including Shenzhen (SZX) and Shanghai (PVG), due to increasing cargo operations between China and Latin America, especially in the past year, Aeromexico’s communication leader, Jimena Rodriguez Grave, told Air Cargo World. The carrier has completed more than 235 exclusive cargo flights from China to Mexico and 16 other countries since the start of the pandemic, according to the release, and has transported more than 4,000 tonnes of essential medical supplies. The WUH-MEX cargo flight is one of many additional routes supporting Asia-Pacific connectivity due to e-commerce and pharma demand, both intra-Asia and from Asia to external markets, according to this year’s Cargo Facts Asia panel on the prospects for Asia-Pacific freighter services . At another 2021 Cargo Facts Asia event, Boeing forecasted Asia trade lanes to lead growth in the airfreight industry during the next 20 years. Additional recently launched cargo-only routes connecting Asia to other global destinations include: DHL Express, which added 17 weekly routes in early April ; Kintetsu World Express, which launched a charter flight program connecting Hong Kong (HKG) and Los Angeles (LAX) earlier this month; and DSV Panalpina’s charter flight between Macau (MFM) and MEX , which was added in 2020. An overreliance on Asia for supply chains has become apparent during the pandemic, and has led to an increased demand for manufacturing in Mexico, especially during the second half of 2020. Efforts to adjust supply chains to Mexico, along with the increase in cargo routes connecting Mexico to the Asia-Pacific region, show the country's growing importance to global supply chains. “We’re seeing — just on the automotive side, on the industrial side — a lot of people shifting manufacturing to Mexico,” said JD Thomas, regional vice president of the south-central region at Crane Worldwide Logistics, in a recent interview with Air Cargo World. "We're investing again, heavily, in infrastructure there and resources to make sure that we're prepared to support those manufacturing and efforts there in Mexico.”
