Air Canada to begin cargo service to Egypt

Montreal-headquartered combination carrier Air Canada is expanding its network with thrice-weekly service between Montreal (YUL) and Cairo, Egypt (CAI) starting June 17. The route operates using a 787-8 Dreamliner offering passenger and cargo capacity, and hopes to connect shipments from the U.S., South America and Canada to CAI via its YUL hub, according to a recent statement from the carrier. (Photo/Air Canada)[/caption] Air Canada's Montreal hub is CEIV Pharma-certified to handle temperature-sensitive shipments, and can accommodate a variety of cargo, including cool-chain shipments, dangerous goods, live animals and general cargo. Air Canada Cargo did not specify the primary cargo expected to be transported on the new route. Meanwhile, the carrier’s revenues for the first quarter of 2021 were up 89% year over year, and it continued to adjust its network of cargo operations throughout the past year. In April, Air Canada launched a twice weekly cargo-only service between Toronto (YYZ) and Basel (BSL) , and added Amsterdam (AMS), Bogota (BOG), Dublin (DUB), Lima (LIM) and Madrid (MAD) to its cargo-only network in June 2020 . During Q1, Air Canada removed an additional 777-300ER and A3300-300 from passenger into cargo service, increasing the number of cargo-only widebody aircraft to nine. The carrier plans to add two 767-300 freighters to its fleet by the end of the year, as reported by our sister publication, Cargo Facts . Despite being based in Montreal, a majority of Air Canada’s current network connects to Toronto. Currently, Air Canada operates 18 routes from its Montreal base that primarily connect to Europe, making the YUL-CAI route a new regional expansion for the carrier, according to the latest widebody flight schedule. Aside from Europe, from YUL Air Canada offers three routes to South America, connectivity to YYZ, Vancouver (YVR) and Calgary (YYC), and one flight into Chicago (ORD), according to the schedule. Air Canada ranked as No. 31 in Air Cargo World ’s most recent Freight 50 , in terms of total freight tonne kilometers. The carrier reported 2019 cargo traffic of about 2 billion FTKs.
