Air Europa signs contract extensions with handler WFS in Spain

Paris-based handler Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) secured cargo handling contract extensions with Spanish carrier Air Europa in Madrid (MAD) and Barcelona (BCN), valid until Q4 2022. [caption id="attachment_96292" align="alignright" width="380"] Photo: WFS[/caption] While Air Europa has held a contract with WFS at MAD since 2018, the carrier only signed an agreement in Barcelona with the cargo handler in January, according to today's statement from WFS. Currently, the Spanish carrier operates a fleet of 787 and 737-800 passenger aircraft with cargo capacity from BCN and MAD to various destinations in Europe and North and South America, according to the statement. In 2020, Air Europa contributed around 27,000 tonnes of cargo throughput at WFS’ cargo terminal at MAD, which ranked No. 47 among the top 50 cargo airports worldwide. Based on 2019 data, MAD reported 588,256 tonnes of transported cargo. Meanwhile at BCN, the carrier contributed several hundred tonnes of cargo in the first five months of its contract, according to the release. Between MAD, BCN and a third facility in Valencia (VLC), WFS occupies more than 25,500 square meters of warehouse space in Spain, including two additional cool rooms for temperature-controlled cargo at MAD, according to the release. In April, WFS stations at MAD and BCN obtained Good Distribution Practice (GDP) certifications for temperature-controlled pharma handling. Over the past year, WFS has been expanding and building its handling operations at several airports. In May, the cargo handler secured a 20-year lease with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) for a 100,000-square-foot facility, with AirBridgeCargo as its inaugural customer . Meanwhile, at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), WFS is set to lease 300,000 square feet of Aeroterm’s new warehouse space, which is expected to be complete by the end of 2023. Across the pond at Heathrow Airport (LHR), WFS announced the addition of a fifth facility to its cargo operations at the airport to support the rising demand for pharma and temperature-sensitive shipments.
