Amazon Air adds Kansas City, Pittsburgh cargo gateways

Amazon Air added Kansas City International Airport (MCI) and Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) to its growing list of U.S. gateways, and touched down at both airports for the first time this week using its Sun Country-operated 737-800 cargo aircraft for continued daily service. Amazon’s first flight to MCI arrived from Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL) in Florida early on Thursday before departing back to LAL later that morning, according to flight tracking software. The first flight to PIT arrived on Wednesday from Richmond International Airport (RIC) and departed Thursday morning for Fort Worth Alliance Airport (AFW), according to flight-tracking software. Both gateways will have daily service from Amazon Air. However, the MCI service may increase frequency to two daily flights later in the summer, Joe McBride, MCI’s marketing and communications manager, told Air Cargo World. PIT could not be immediately reached for further comment regarding plans for increased flight frequency. Ground handling and package sorting at both airports will be managed by Amazon logistics partners; PrimeFlight Cargo will handle packages at MCI, and Trego-Dugan Aviation will handle Amazon’s cargo at PIT. Through partner lease agreements, Amazon Air leased a 34,000-square-foot onsite sorting area at MCI, according to the release, while a news update from PIT shared that Amazon is leasing a 50,000-square-foot space at the airport. Aside from Amazon Air, PIT also recently welcomed Finnair Cargo in April, which is operating short-term cargo flights from the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL) in Finland to transport automotive parts from Asia to North America, according to a news update from PIT. Amazon has been rapidly expanding its U.S. delivery network over the past year, including through the recent launch of Amazon Air’s gateway hub at San Bernadino Airport (SBD) in April. Amazon Air also plans to expand its network to Canada with Cargojet-operated 767 freighters, and began daily operations in at Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport (TOL) and Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) in March.
