American Airlines Cargo, WFS launch operations in Milan

American Airlines Cargo is continuing to invest in its European presence with the launch of operations at Worldwide Flight Services’ (WFS) new Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) cargo terminal, which will handle the airline’s daily flights to New York (JFK) and Miami (MIA).

The northern Italian hub manages 54 percent of Italy’s air cargo traffic and hosts 115 all-cargo flights per week, MXP said. Last month, WFS opened the 53,000-square-foot MXP cargo terminal, with contracts from China Cargo Airlines and American Airlines Cargo already under its belt. The facility has the capacity to accommodate a diverse portfolio of goods, including auto parts, fashion and pharmaceuticals.

American Airlines, traditionally passenger-focused, has been investing in the cargo faction of its business in recent years. At the beginning of the year, the Fort Worth-based carrier launched four new services connecting the United States to Europe, and in June, a service to Cuba.
