Antonov Airlines applies for emergency transport exemption for Hawaii

Antonov Airlines has applied for an emergency exemption from the U.S. Department of Transportation, requesting permission to transport two trailer-mounted water filtration systems to Hawaii amid a water-contamination crisis. [caption id="attachment_51577" align="alignright" width="450"] (Photo/Antonov Airlines)[/caption] If granted, the emergency exemption will permit the Ukrainian carrier to make a single one-way charter flight transporting the water filtration systems from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) to Honolulu International Airport (HNL) via Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Unusually high levels of petroleum were first detected in the drinking water at the Oahu military base near Pearl Harbor last month, causing health officials to warn residents against using the water for any purpose. The contamination has been attributed to a jet fuel spill in an access tunnel at the site of the Red Hill well shaft. Due to the time-sensitive nature of the crisis, Antonov has requested permission to carry the water filtration systems between Dec. 13 and 16. Delivery via ocean would not be possible before Jan. 3, necessitating a swift air operation, according to Vectrus Systems Corp., a military supplier and charterer of the Antonov flight. The trailers are too large to be carried on freighters operated by U.S. carriers, according to Antonov. The carrier’s AN-124-100 aircraft, one of the world’s largest, is capable of transporting both trailers on a single flight. Antonov already holds a foreign air carrier permit authorizing the carrier to engage in charter all-cargo foreign air transport between the U.S. and any other point or points, according to the carrier’s application. Earlier this month, Antonov transported a 40-tonne shipment of control and battery rooms from Stockholm to Lome, Togo (LWF) using one of its AN-124-100s.
