Burrell Aviation building cargo facilities at BTR, COS

Airport development group Burrell Aviation, a division of Colorado-based Burrell Group, will develop cargo facilities at Baton Rouge Airport (BTR) and Colorado Springs Airport (COS). Burrell will lease and develop 53 acres at BTR’s Aviation Business Park and 65 acres at COS, the company shared in separate releases. Regional airports have grown in importance for cargo carriers in the past few years as larger hubs have faced congestion and backlog . Amazon has also shown special interest in regional U.S. airports for flights by its owned airline, Amazon Air. The developer also has projects in the works at New Mexico airport Dona Ana County Jetport (DNA) and Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport (BKV), according to releases from earlier this year. Baton Rouge The two groups broke ground at the BTR Aviation Business Park on Dec. 12, signaling the start of the development plans for 400,000 square feet of cargo facilities. The site will be fully operational within the next two to three years, a BTR spokesperson told Air Cargo World . The partnership aims to grow off-runway BTR’s Aviation Business Park as well as create job growth and economic output in Baton Rouge, Mike Edwards, BTR’s director of aviation, said in the release. Presently, BTR does not have regularly scheduled cargo services, the spokesperson said. Burrell will be responsible for marketing the site, securing anchor tenants and creating plans for facilities and infrastructure, whether it be fore cargo carriers, freight forwarders, aerospace and defense firms, cold storage, logistics or aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO). BTR is “an ideal location” for Burrell Aviation’s portfolio, Chief Executive John Carver said in a Dec. 12 release. “The airport is accessible to other major transportation modes such as interstates, rail lines and a deep-water port. And the shovel-ready site includes significant economic incentives." Burrell Aviation’s initial lease will last 30 years, with two 10-year options to renew, according to the release. Colorado Springs Burrell will invest up to $110 million in private sector capital at COS including a cargo-handling facility, aircraft maintenance and testing space, cold storage, and warehouse, distribution and integrated logistics facilities. The City of Colorado Springs and Burrell Aviation aim for the project to create economic development and new jobs, along with modern and sustainable facilities. “The Colorado Springs Airport is an economic driver for our regional and state economies, and this capital investment will make it even more competitive,” Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said in a Nov. 14 release. “New investment in modernized, sustainable facilities will serve to enhance the integrity of our regional supply chain — to which our population is reliant upon — and help improve the environment in which we all live." Neither the city nor Burrell have shared an expected timeline for the project. This article has been updated to include comments from BTR.
