Cargo stakeholders grow warehouse footprints

Cargo airlines and freight forwarders are continuing to grow their warehouse footprints to meet the elevated airfreight demand, with multiple stakeholders opening new facilities in the past week. Photo/CEVA Logistics[/caption] Forwarder CEVA Logistics opened a sustainability-focused warehouse in Jundiai, Brazil, near Sao Paulo, according to a March 24 release. The 25,000-square-meter facility is equipped with 27 docks and a maximum storage capacity of 38,000 pallets. The facility was constructed using translucent ceiling tiles; hosts a program for reusing rainwater; and uses all-LED lighting and a thermos-acoustic system to help regulate internal temperatures, according to the release. In addition, the warehouse is undergoing analysis of how much sunlight it can harvest, with plans for the future installation of solar panels underway. Meanwhile, cargo facility developer Aeroterm last week also acquired two airport-adjacent warehouses in Dorval, Quebec, just 10 minutes from Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL). The combined facilities offer over 220,000 square feet and are equipped with 24 loading positions. “Montreal-Trudeau International Airport received 124,424 tons of belly cargo in 2019, a 5% increase from 2018, and that number is expected to increase dramatically in the coming years,” Alexi Lachambre, vice president of development at Aeroterm, said in a release. Aeroterm also recently announced plans to develop a 140,000-square-foot facility at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). Turkish Cargo also unveiled its new fully automated terminal, designed by material handling company Lodige Industries, at its hub at Istanbul Airport (IST) last week. The 300,000 square-meter terminal is equipped to handle 4 million tonnes of cargo annually, which is significantly larger than its former hub at Ataturk Airport (ISL), according to a March 22 release. The carrier’s cargo capacity at ISL was 165,000 square meters and had a yearly throughput capacity of 1.2 million tonnes. Turkish Cargo’s facility is divided into specialized cargo areas, with 2,000 square meters of space dedicated to express shipments, 500 square meters dedicated for live animal cargo and 5,000 square meters for e-commerce and mail cargo, according to the release. An additional 1,000 square meters is designated for high security, valuable cargo with 6,000 square meters worth of space set aside for temperature-controlled shipments. The facility is further equipped with automated high-bay warehouses with 17,000 storage locations, 30 stacking cranes, 15 lifts and an integrated warehouse management system that interfaces directly with customer and freight management systems, according to the release. The integrated system will be continuously monitored by a combination of Lodige Customer Care Center team members and on-site specialists. Turkish Cargo completed its move from ISL to IST in February , a process that began in 2019 and saw the carrier temporarily adopt a dual-hub system, with cargo operations continuing at ISL while passenger operations moved to IST. Turkish Airlines ranked at No. 10 in Air Cargo World ’s Freight 50 ranking of the world’s top cargo carriers, based on 2020 traffic.
