Data drives efficiency, accuracy

Exhaustive data collection paves the way for operational efficiencies, especially in finances and risk forecasting, in the aviation industry. [caption id="attachment_57139462" align="alignright" width="300"] (Photo/Canva)[/caption] Rigorous data collection has allowed Air France KLM Martinair Cargo (AFKLMP) to implement solutions that streamline processes in multiple areas of the business, panelist Adriaan den Heijer , executive vice president at Air France-KLM Cargo and managing director at Martinair , said at the Cargo Facts EMEA event earlier this month. The next conference hosted by Air Cargo Next sister publication Cargo Facts will be Cargo Facts Asia from April 15 to 17 in Singapore; click here for more information and to register. “We are using [data] in all our processes,” den Heijer said at Cargo Facts EMEA. “I think we are most advanced in the area of pricing [and] revenue management.” We take “the volatility of the market and that we directly model into: What does that mean in combination with history for future willingness to pay and demand curves?” he said. AFKLMP launched a customer relationship management solution in July 2023 that integrates customer data into a single platform. By analyzing data on customer preferences, shipping patterns and feedback, AFKLMP can tailor services to each customer. The platform, created alongside software company Salesforce and telecommunications company Vonage , went live in select markets in 2023 and a global rollout is planned for this year. “The goal here is to give the customer service employee the most relevant, data-driven context in order to, in the best way possible, know, understand and serve our customer,” Bernard Geersing , vice president of distribution and customer service at AFKLMP, previously told Air Cargo Next . “In the future we plan to add AI to even better understand the customer needs. In the end, this provides a total, 360-degree view of the customer.” Additionally, Air France-KLM announced last month that it will implement a cargo revenue accounting solution from software provider Accelya to process and optimize its cargo billing, settlement and accounting processes. The announcement did not disclose when the carrier would begin using the software. The solution will be integrated into the carrier’s operational and financial systems and can be integrated into industry platforms like SIS and CASS. Data in operations Though the business side of AFKLMP is ahead of the curve with data usage, the carrier is beginning to translate those lessons into the operational side, den Heijer said. “We have tried to do the specific analysis on the cargo side with all the data we have available and with professionals,” he said. “I think that that’s one area, but we also see more and more things going on on the operational side.” Data is also critical for enhancing compliance and safety. “We do a lot also on compliance and the safety side, where we vary based upon data models and artificial intelligence tools,” he said. “Based upon the booking we get in, we can better profile [shipments] based upon security risks and compliance risks in order to intervene in the chain already formed.” AFKLMP will be relying on data from Swiss cold chain container developer SkyCell ’s Internet of Things (IoT) tracking technology across its unit load device fleet, according to a January announcement. IoT is an internet-enabled network of devices with sensors, processing ability and software that allows devices to exchange data and coordinate operations.
