DB Schenker, Lufthansa Cargo and Nokia enter SAF partnership

German carrier Lufthansa Cargo and forwarder DB Schenker have extended their weekly carbon-neutral flight between Frankfurt (FRA) and Shanghai (PVG). The scheduled winter flight rotation is set to commence at the end of October and continue until the end of March 2022. [caption id="attachment_97388" align="alignright" width="560"] DB Schenker, Lufthansa Cargo and Nokia partner on SAF-fueled flight (Photo: Lufthansa Cargo)[/caption] Finland-based telecommunication provider Nokia, which also joined the initiative, has committed to shipping 10 tonnes of communications network equipment weekly from a facility in Shanghai to its European hub in the Netherlands during the next five months, according to today’s release from Lufthansa Cargo. Nokia’s end-to-end agreement with DB Schenker also covers land transport, which will utilize hydrogenated vegetable oil, a type of biofuel. The flight between FRA and PVG is completely powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) without the need for carbon offsetting, saving roughly 174 tonnes of regular kerosene weekly, according to the release. The 777 freighter rotation, which launched as a regular product in April, achieved a reduction of 20,250 tonnes of carbon emissions during the summer. An additional 14,175 tonnes of CO2 are expected to be saved throughout the winter flight schedule. The SAF is produced from waste, like used cooking oils, and sourced from Finnish oil producer, refiner and marketer Neste, according to the release. Neste plans to increase its production of SAF to 1.5 million tonnes annually by the end of 2023. Currently, SAF is roughly three times more expensive than conventional kerosene. Many industry stakeholders have committed to reducing aviation’s carbon emissions through various sustainability initiatives , recognizing that SAF is key to decarbonizing the airfreight industry . In turn, sustainability has been the source of collaboration between many freight forwarders and carriers. Japan-based ANA Cargo launched its SAF initiative on Oct. 14 , and conducted its first SAF-fueled cargo flight from Japan to Germany on Sept. 29 with Japanese forwarders Kintetsu World Express, Yusen Logistics and Nippon Express. Lufthansa Cargo and forwarder Kuehne+Nagel also recently partnered to promote the use of power-to-liquid SAF , which is created using renewable electricity, water and CO2, while forwarder Geodis started offering SAF options for its customers in September.
