Delta Cargo, Virgin Atlantic open new London Heathrow tech-focused export facility

Delta Cargo and Virgin Atlantic Cargo announced the opening of a new technology-focused export facility at London Heathrow Airport (LHR). The carriers announced the move into the new facility, which will double the carriers’ cargo operations space at the airport and is housed at the dnata City East building at LHR, in January of this year.

Some of the benefits available at the new facility include double the number of delivery doors for 18 total doors, high-rise racking with 1,350 positions for export freight storage, a dedicated Pharma Zone, special dangerous goods and live animal facilities and enhanced x-ray imaging technology, among others.

One of the major technological improvements of the new facility is targeted at more efficient trucking operations under the “Gatehouse” concept, allowing drivers dropping off cargo for export to complete documentation processes without leaving their vehicles. The facility is also enabled for real-time acceptance using the facility’s door management system and hand-held technology, allowing for instant update messages confirming cargo shipments and handling.

The new facility is the latest development in the growing relationship between Virgin Atlantic and Delta Cargo. Beginning next year, the carriers will increase their trans-Atlantic flights between London Gatwick Airport (LGW), LHR and Manchester (MAN) to destinations in the United States, the companies announced jointly in August.
