DSV targets US semiconductor industry with 2 acquisitions

Danish forwarding giant DSV has announced the acquisition of two U.S.-based companies — S&M Moving Systems West and Global Diversity Logistics . The acquisitions are “ consistent with DSV’s growth strategy,” the company said in a March 21 news release, adding that the move will strengthen the group’s position in the U.S. semiconductor industry, align with its new Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airpo rt (AZA) air charter operations and support its growing cross-border services to Latin America. S&M Moving Systems West, headquartered in Phoenix, and Global Diversity Logistics, headquartered in Chandler, Ariz., are run by the same family. They have a total of 130 employees and operate across 11 sites in Oregon and Arizona. Together, they provide services in domestic road freight, international air and sea freight, warehousing, tradeshow logistics and specialist solutions to support the semiconductor industry. “ We have a strong presence in the U.S. and these acquisitions underline our continuous commitment to strengthening our U.S. position, competencies and service offerings,” Niels Larsen, president of DSV Air & Sea, said in the release. “They also provide access to a strong heritage and a wealth of knowledge and experience in the semiconductor industry,” he said. The transactions are expected to be completed in April. The companies declined to disclose the purchase price. Semiconductor industry picks up Air Cargo Next reported last month that DSV was poised to set up a base to serve its own flights at AZA , a move likely prompted by the presence of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chip maker. TSMC and Intel have plants near Phoenix , and TSMC plans to add a second plant near the city. The semiconductor supply chain, which depends heavily on intercontinental air routes, is of growing importance to forwarders. Manufacturing was severely hit during the pandemic but is picking up again , and the outlook for the industry is increasingly positive. AZA’s board of directors has approved a lease for a DSV facility at the airport , and some B747 test operations were to start this month. A spokesperson for AZA told Air Cargo Next Tuesday that DSV had indicated that it plans to start regular flight operation s in May. DSV officials were unavailable for comment.
