Finnair Cargo expands winter schedule to Asia, Middle East

Finnair Cargo is relaunching flights this winter after 2020 and 2021 cancellations, adding additional capacity from its Helsinki hub (HEL) to India, Japan, Korea, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Finnair was one of the many airlines that launched cargo-only flights with passenger aircraft that it has since reconfigured for passenger operations. Finnair’s routes to Asia have also been affected by Russian airspace closure but cargo demand kept flights in the area, despite longer routing, according to the company’s September travel figures. [caption id="attachment_57132583" align="alignright" width="351"] Photo / Finnair, Aleksi Poutanen[/caption] Finnair Cargo began digital booking last winter as well, offering cargo capacity on cargo.one, WebCargo and CargoAi for forwarders in the EU, India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and the U.S., according to an Oct. 14 release. Asia-Pacific services In Japan, the carrier will fly to Tokyo Haneda (HND) and Tokyo Narita (NRT) using an Airbus 350 with scheduled trucking service between the airports, “for smooth supply chain solutions for customers,” Pasi Nopanen, Finnair’s sales director for Asia, told Air Cargo World . Finnair will also return to Phuket (HKT) this winter, in addition to creating capacity between HEL to Bangkok (BKK) route with daily flights and four extra services, he added. Flights to Seoul (INC) and Hong Kong (HKG) will increase to six- and three-times-weekly, respectively, Nopanen said. Finnair had paused flights between HEL and Delhi (DEL) early in the pandemic and did not resume flights to India until passenger restrictions eased in 2021, Nopanen told Air Cargo World earlier this summer. The carrier began flights to Mumbai (BOM) in August and will increase to three weekly flights this winter, he said. “Mumbai has been on the radar all the time, naturally boosted by the closure of Russia airspace, which caused changes to flight routings,” Nopanen added. “So now we are back in Mumbai after 13 years, with excellent connections to all of Europe and the U.S.” Finnair’s cargo traffic to Asia has increased 71% year to date, moving around 25,464 tonnes, according to September traffic figures. Dubai flights The carrier also added weekly Airbus 350 flights to Dubai (DXB) as of Oct. 14, which will operate three-times-weekly starting Oct. 30. “Dubai is the hub for the multimodal sea-air product and our focus is naturally on that operation,” Nopanen said. “Our customers are bringing mainly industrial equipment, spare parts, garments and other consumer goods from all over Southeast Asia by sea to Jebel Ali and we fly them to Europe and some to North America.” Finnair ranked No. 48 in Air Cargo World’s most recent Freight 50 , based on 2020 cargo tonnage.
