IAG Cargo opens new operations control center at LHR

IAG Cargo , the cargo division of International Airlines Group , has opened an advanced control center at its largest hub at London Heathrow Airport. (Courtesy/IAG Cargo)[/caption] IAG Cargo aims to make faster and more informed decisions with real-time data and workload forecasting tools at the new London Operations Control Centre. IAG Cargo moves more than 2,000 shipments through the airport (LHR) each day, the carrier told Air Cargo Next . The airport ranks 24th on Air Cargo Next ’s top 50 cargo airports list, with throughput of 1.4 million tonnes of cargo in 2022. Increased technology The new center, which opened Aug. 21, features several technological upgrades from its predecessor, the carrier said, such as: A VuWall -powered video wall, which gives a comprehensive view of freight movements and key performance indicators on a large screen, facilitating real-time collaboration among the IAG Cargo team. Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) capabilities, which lets team leaders interact seamlessly with the main video wall from their desks. KVM software allows users to switch quickly and easily between multiple computers or servers from a single desktop. A touch panel control system that allows operators to switch easily between video sources and information displays based on operational needs. Dedicated operations meeting rooms that are equipped with two large HD screens; ceiling microphones; and an electric pan, tilt and zoom, or ePTZ, camera. This setup enables Microsoft Teams calls and discussions. “The new facility leverages advanced audiovisual technology to optimize situational awareness and collaboration,” an IAG Cargo spokesperson told Air Cargo Next . “For example, the video wall displays feeds from multiple cameras strategically positioned throughout key operational areas. This provides a real-time, multifaceted view of freight movement.” The operations meeting rooms are equipped to allow for command-and-control meetings as needed, according to the spokesperson. “In any type of operational disruption, such as weather, it is critical to understand the challenges that accompany aircraft movements,” the spokesperson said. “This awareness allows us to adjust our operational plans in order to move resources and capabilities to where the flights will be operating. The new digital screens will provide quick access to this information and we can visually see the impact this will have, allowing our senior teams to make proactive operational decisions to maintain our service levels for customers.” Management additions IAG Cargo’s senior management will be based in the center and the carrier will introduce six senior management roles to lead day-to-day operations, according to IAG Cargo. Four of the six new senior manager of cargo operations positions were filled internally and IAG Cargo is looking outside to hire the final two. “Teams working in the new London Operations Control Centre have also played an active part in the development of the new facility, with their feedback being used to shape the final design,” the spokesperson said. Investment in the new control center is part of IAG Cargo’s overall transformation to focus “on enhancing customer experience and driving operational efficiency,” the spokesperson told Air Cargo Next, without disclosing the cost of the center. “We are committed to leveraging technology to enhance our operations to both benefit our customers and optimize the movement of cargo to support global trade,” the spokesperson said. “For example, with the implementation of a cutting-edge AI-powered camera solution at our London Heathrow hub , [we’re] optimizing efficiency in cargo loading planning and ultimately improving customer [customs, immigration and quarantine] quality.”
