ITA Airways Cargo joins cargo.one platform

ITA Airways Cargo is the latest carrier to join Germany-based cargo.one as the digital booking platform continues to add partners to its network with the arrival of peak season. The partnership marks the opening of the Italian carrier’s first digital sales channel since its 2020 founding. Cargo.one is in the final phase of testing ITA’s bookings on the platform before going live with real-time capacity within weeks, Veit Dinges, vice president and general manager of airlines, EMEA at cargo.one, told Air Cargo World . Freight forwarders will be able to place bookings with the carrier in eight European markets: Italy, Germany, the U.K., the Netherlands, France, Spain, Switzerland and Belgium, Dinges said. Capacity will also be available from the U.S., he noted. Capacity will later expand to the rest of ITA’s global network, he added, without specifying when. A year of partnerships [caption id="attachment_57132633" align="alignright" width="367"] Photo/IATA[/caption] The booking platform has secured multiple global partnerships this year, earlier this month adding Qatar Airways Cargo , and it is available in markets such as North America, Europe, Japan, India and Brazil. Air France KLM Martinair Cargo (AFKLMP Cargo) also joined the cargo.one platform this month. Earlier this year, the company had targeted the Asia-Pacific region for expansion , adding capacity from ANA Cargo, Lufthansa Cargo, Finnair Cargo and Japan-based JAL Cargo . Singapore Airlines Cargo , MASKargo and Nippon Cargo Airlines are among the additional Asia-Pacific-based carriers that have signed on with the platform. See also: Tech takes off: Inside the digital adoption surge With the coming of peak season, however muted it may be , cargo.one expects capacity on its platform to increase as airlines shift to digital booking , Co-Chief Executive Moritz Claussen previously told Air Cargo World . “We expect to see a real ramp-up in digital adoption in many markets,” Claussen said. With more than 35 partner carriers, cargo.one is on track to have signed roughly 50% of global air cargo capacity to the platform, he added. ITA’s uncertain future Since launching as the successor to bankrupt Alitalia in 2020, ITA Airways has grown its fleet — mainly consisting of former Alitalia planes — to 69 aircraft, mostly passenger aircraft with bellyhold cargo capacity, according to ITA’s website. The new partnership comes as the carrier faces a corporate shakeup. On Oct. 12, the board of Italian state-owned ITA stripped Chairman Alfredo Altavilla of key responsibilities, transferring them to Chief Executive Fabio Lazzerini amid growing tensions over the carrier’s planned sale, Bloomberg reported. The preferred bidder, an investor group led by Certares Management, Delta Air Lines and AFKLMP Cargo, said in August it was in talks with the Rome-based Finance Ministry to determine the terms of joint ownership between the Italian government and private investors, according to published reports.
