June WorldACD data shows mixed market recovery

Worldwide air cargo revenues grew 79% in H1 2021 over H1 2019, even as volumes were flat over the same period. Recovery, however, has not been even across regions or sectors of the industry. Airlines contributed evenly to the return of 2019 volume levels when grouped regionally, according to June data from aggregator WorldACD. The two exceptions were African airlines, which saw volume growth of 28% in H1 2021 over H1 2019, and European airlines, which contracted 5% in the same period. [caption id="attachment_95455" align="alignright" width="450"] Photo courtesy of BUD[/caption] All of the airlines that increased yields by more than 100% over H1 2019 were small or midsize carriers when measured by cargo carried, according to the report. Regardless of region or size, all airlines fared better outside their home regions than within them. Additionally, all groups saw the greatest growth outbound from origins in the Asia-Pacific region. Forwarders also saw variability in growth, depending on their size and region. Europe’s top worldwide forwarders did best year over year but failed to return to their 2019 market share, the report stated. Top worldwide forwarders from the Asia-Pacific region improved considerably YoY and grew 18% in H1 2021 over the same period in 2019. Meanwhile, top regional forwarders lost ground in Europe while seeing growth in smaller regions like Africa and the Middle East and South Asia. Express transport expanded considerably over H1 2019. Total weight grew by 50% while the average size of express shipments grew from 233 kilograms to 418 kilograms, which the report attributes to the growth of e-commerce. General cargo shrank 1% overall in H1 2021 compared to H1 2019, while specialty cargo grew 2% over the same period. However, general cargo saw the highest yield increase over 2019, reaching 86%. Pharma and temperature-controlled cargo came close at 75%, as did vulnerable and high-tech shipments, which reached 80%. Regarding expectations for July 2021 performance, the report noted that “it seems likely that the present month will show a month-over-month yield increase of a few percentage points coupled with (seasonal) diminishing volumes.”
