Lufthansa Cargo Q3 revenue buoyed by increased volumes

Lufthansa Group today reported 824 million euros ($953 million) in revenue for the third quarter for its Logistics segment, which includes Lufthansa Cargo, up 5.4% year over year. “This result was primarily volume driven, with chargeable weight up by 11% in Q3 compared to the previous year,” Chief Financial Officer Till Streichert said on today’s earnings call. [caption id="attachment_57292622" align="aligncenter" width="1920"] (Courtesy/Lufthansa Cargo)[/caption] “The volume increase was also a result of higher capacity due to one additional new 777 freighter,” unit 68197 , which Boeing delivered to Lufthansa in August 2024, “and the marketing of ITA Airways belly capacities, which started during summer this year,” he said. Yields at Lufthansa Cargo were up 0.9% YoY in Q3, Lufthansa’s earnings report said. The group also reported in Q3: 4.7 billion available cargo tonne kilometers (CTK), up 4.7% YoY; 2.7 billion revenue CTKs, up 6.8% YoY; and A cargo load factor of 56.5%, up 1.1 percentage points YoY. Lufthansa Cargo generated an operating profit of $56.7 million, up 28.9% YoY. The carrier expanded its network in August when Swiss WorldCargo joined a joint business agreement between Lufthansa Cargo and United Cargo, enhancing trans-Atlantic cargo services with expanded connectivity and coordinated operations. Cargo sales in Europe and Asia Pacific were particularly strong in Q3, Streichert said. “The Asian e-commerce business remains our most important growth driver here, and frequent charter flights to and from China, built at preset rates, ensure regular revenue streams and provide also a degree of predictability in what is normally a business model that is known for its high short-term dynamics,” he said. Q3 results The carrier group reported record operating revenue in Q3 at $13 billion, up 43% YoY. Lufthansa Group also reported in Q3: Net profit of $1.1 billion, down 11.8% YoY; Operating income of $13.5 billion, up 2.7% YoY; Adjusted EBITDA of $2.2 billion, down 0.6% YoY; and Earnings per share of 94 cents, down 12% YoY. Lufthansa Cargo operates twelve 777Fs and four A321P2Fs, and uses belly capacity on Lufthansa’s passenger aircraft. Also, AeroLogic , a joint venture between Lufthansa and DHL Express, operates twenty-eight 777Fs, including six for Lufthansa. AeroLogic added its twenty-eighth 777F (68149) in September. Lufthansa has ordered seven 777-8Fs, which it expects to receive by 2030, according to Lufthansa’s 2024 earnings report , released March 6. Risks ahead Lufthansa laid out areas of concern for Q4 and heading into 2026, including: Risk of labor disputes and actions; Tensions between the United States and its trading partners; and Ongoing armed conflict in the Middle East. Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo pilots voted Sept. 30 to strike over failed negotiations with management regarding pension plans. The Vereinigung Cockpit union has not gone on strike since the vote, which passed with an 88% majority, but retains the option to go on strike at any time. Trade tensions between the United States and its key trade partners, such as China and the European Union, “are leading to an increasingly volatile global economic environment,” Lufthansa Group said in its earnings report. The group said tensions and evolving tariffs could lead to reduced air cargo demand and volumes, and increased costs of materials, aircraft and aircraft parts. Lastly, the ongoing armed conflicts in the Middle East could continue to result in operational restrictions. For instance, airspace closed over Israel and Iran for several days in June as the countries traded attacks. Shares of Lufthansa Group ( OTCMKTS: DLAKY ) were up 7.02 % from market open to $8.54 as of market close today. Lufthansa Group has a market capitalization of $10.4 billion.
