More airlines cut service to Tel Aviv amid war

Major carriers around the world have halted services to Israel as the escalating conflict between Israel and the militant group Hamas continues in the country. British Airways temporarily stopped service to and from Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) after a plane bound for the Israeli city returned to London Heathrow Airport (LHR) due to heightened security concerns Wednesday. “ We’re suspending our flights to and from Tel Aviv up to and including Saturday, Oct. 14,” the airline stated on its website. [caption id="attachment_96776" align="alignright" width="300"] Photo/Cathay Pacific[/caption] Cathay Pacific sent an alert Wednesday about halting its services to Tel Aviv until the end of October. “ In view of the latest situation in Israel, all Cathay Pacific flights between Hong Kong and Tel Aviv from today up to and including [Oct. 29] will be canceled,” the carrier stated in an email. “Customers who have already begun their journey and have not received a message from Cathay Pacific are advised to check the current status of their booking.” Other airlines which have cut service to Israel include: Turkish Airlines , which on Tuesday announced via X, formerly Twitter, that it has suspended flights until further notice due to the current situation in Israel; Turkish carrier Pegasus Airlines , which posted to X on Tuesday that it, too, has suspended all flights to and from the country; and Air India , which sent a service alert saying it would stop flights into the country until Oct. 31. FedEx resumed some flights into the country Tuesday after suspending services last weekend. “We continue to provide service in Israel in line with government requirements and are closely monitoring the situation,” a FedEx spokesperson told Air Cargo Next . Humanitarian efforts With numerous airlines cutting service to Israel, humanitarian efforts have been limited, the Charity and Security Network, a U.S.-based humanitarian organization, stated on its website. According to the statement, “With the recent outbreak of conflict in Palestine and Israel, it is imperative that the fundamental humanitarian needs of those suffering from the violence be addressed. This means allowing safe passage where possible for humanitarian supplies to be delivered to civilian populations.” Late Wednesday evening, The Jerusalem Post reported that a cargo plane from the United States arrived with “advanced military equipment.” Few details were available regarding the aircraft operator or the size of the shipment. “ The equipment was acquired by Israel through a collaborative effort involving the Procurement Administration , the Defense Ministry ’s procurement team from the United States and the division in charge of international transportation,” the news outlet reported. “The team facilitated the delivery using a cargo plane that flew directly from the U.S. to transport the equipment.” On Tuesday, U.S. President Joe Biden addressed the conflict, promising support and supplies for Israel. “ We stand with Israel,” he said. “And we will make sure Israel has what it needs to take care of its citizens, defend itself and respond to this attack. There is no justification for terrorism.” Israel was initially attacked by Hamas on Oct. 7, in what Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan , called “Israel’s 9/11,” prompting the country to declare war on Gaza. Hamas is designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.
