MSC Air Cargo adds South Korea and China freighter service

MSC Air Cargo is serving South Korea and China on its round-the-world freighter service that launched in early December 2022. The carrier connects Mexico City (MEX), Indianapolis (IND) and Liege (LGG) with Seoul (ICN) and Xiamen (XMN), according to a January schedule announcement. Twice-weekly routings read IND-LGG-ICN-XMN. From XMN, flights are routed Anchorage (ANC) to MEX, according to the carrier’s schedule. Hong Kong (HKG), which was a stop on a previous schedule, has been removed. [caption id="attachment_57133207" align="alignright" width="450"] Photo/MSC Air Cargo[/caption] Switzerland-based shipping giant MSC announced the creation of the airline in September 2022, following in the footsteps of peers CMA CGM and Maersk in diversifying from its core business into air cargo and end-to-end logistics services. The carrier has entered into a long-term ACMI agreement with Atlas Air for four new 777-200Fs, one of which is currently in service with the remaining three set to be delivered later this year. ICN “plans to strategically collaborate with cargo airlines launched by global shipping companies, to lay the groundwork for creating new cargo volume, such as vitalizing multimodal cargo transportation by sea and air networks,” Kyung Wook Kim, ICN president and chief executive, told Air Cargo World . “We will continue to strengthen Incheon International Airport’s competitiveness in air logistics by developing new cargo terminals and attracting investment, while maintaining its second-place ranking in international cargo traffic volume through expansion of logistics infrastructure and networks,” he added. Situated in the Fujian province of southeast China, Xiamen handled nearly 300,000 tonnes of cargo in 2021, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). In April 2022, Xiamen Airlines began three-times-weekly charter flights between XMN and LGG with B787-9 passenger freighters. MSC Air Cargo also operates flights from MEX to IND and roundtrips between IND and LGG carrying a mix of general cargo including pharmaceuticals and perishables. Ocean shippers organize air network Maersk Air Cargo launched its first commercial service in October 2022, linking ICN with Chicago Rockford Airport (RFD) and Greenville-Spartanburg Airport (GSP) twice weekly with 767F aircraft operated by Miami-based Amerijet. Maersk will commence a 767F service between China and its designated European hub at Billund Airport (BLL). However, it has not disclosed when flights will begin, the number of weekly flights or which airports will participate.
