Neste and Avfuel partner to deliver SAF to the US

Neste and Avfuel this week announced a partnership that will bring 515 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to the U.S. every year by 2023. Photo/Lufthansa[/caption] Under the agreement, Finnish oil producer, refiner and marketer Neste will provide SAF to Avfuel, which will oversee sales. Avfuel’s customers include airports, flight departments, fixed base operators (FBOs) and original equipment manufacturers. Avfuel will become an officially branded Neste distributor and will sell the SAF under the brand name MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel, or MY SAF. “This strategic partnership is an exciting development for the industry’s sustainability initiative and a natural next step in response to aviation’s growing demand for SAF,” said Craig Sincock, president and CEO of Avfuel. “Together, we are able to support aviation’s sustainability goals and enhance supply availability at a commercial scale, filling an immense gap in the industry’s supply chain.” Through the partnership, Avfuel will provide a continuous stream of SAF to the U.S. to meet increasing demand, according to the release. Avfuel-branded FBO Monterey Jet Center, located south of San Jose, Calif., will be the first site to receive MY SAF, serving as a testing ground for the fuel’s rollout. The first delivery is scheduled for the first quarter of this year and the company plans to broaden its customer base in the months thereafter. MY SAF is made with sustainably sourced, renewable waste and residue like used cooking oil, the release said. A drop-in fuel, it offers an immediate way for operators to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from aircraft, with no modification to aircraft or fuel-distribution processes necessary. Blended with petroleum-based jet fuel, MY SAF is verified to meet ASTM D-1655 specifications for jet fuel. It can also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 80% when compared to fossil fuel, according to the release. Neste anticipates a greenhouse gas reduction by as much as 19 tonnes per truckload once its SAF has been blended at the 35% ratio. The fuel-distribution announcement follows on the heels of similar sustainability-focused, forwarder-driven partnerships with carriers to organize cargo flights powered by SAFs. Earlier this week, Kuehne + Nagel announced it is partnering with Air France KLM to create a lane of SAF-fueled flights between Los Angeles (LAX) and Amsterdam (AMS). That partnership marks the genesis of the first fully carbon-neutral lane between the U.S. and Europe, according to the release. To offset any emissions caret in the process of manufacturing, processing, or shipping the SAF to be used on the lane, Kuehne + Nagel said it will support carbon-reduction projects certified as “verified carbon standard” and/or “gold standard,” the highest certifications for carbon reduction efforts currently available from nonprofit carbon neutrality organization Verra. In November 2020, DB Schenker and Lufthansa Cargo partnered on a similar initiative, opening a carbon-neutral lane between Frankfurt (FRA) and Shanghai (PVG). The pair launched the first carbon-neutral flight on the lane Nov. 29, with plans to make the lane fully emissions-free by spring of 2021. "We are already further ahead than many think when it comes to climate protection in airfreight,” said Jochen Thewes, CEO of DB Schenker. “We can demonstrate this with the first CO2-neutral freight flight in history. With the start of the 2021 summer flight schedule, DB Schenker will offer greenhouse gas-neutral airfreight as a regular product.” DB Schenker and Lufthansa Cargo have also agreed to invest in a reforestation project to compensate for the CO2 emissions created during the manufacture of the SAF to be used on their FRA-PVG lane.
