NorthLink Aviation to fund 120-acre air cargo terminal at ANC

Equity firm Tiger Infrastructure Partners acquired a controlling stake in Anchorage-based investment firm NorthLink Aviation, which has secured a 120-acre, 55-year lease at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) with the intention of developing an air cargo terminal at the airport’s south campus. The air cargo terminal will feature a multitenant, 100,000-square-foot facility that will include space for temperature-controlled and cool-chain shipments, as well as office space, Sean Dolan, CEO at NorthLink, told Air Cargo World . [caption id="attachment_77618" align="alignright" width="465"] Photo/ Courtesy of ANC[/caption] “One of the unique aspects of ANC is that it is exempt from the Jones Act, which provides U.S. and non-U.S.-flagged carriers with the ability to optimize cargoes flying between Asia and the Lower-48,” Dolan said. “The lack of independent warehouse infrastructure at ANC has limited carriers taking advantage of this commercial opportunity." Dolan further noted that NorthLink is looking to partner with both existing cargo carriers at ANC, like Alaska Air Cargo and Atlas Air, as well as new ones. In addition to the new warehouse, the air cargo terminal will include dual-hydrant fueling systems, infrastructure to recycle glycol used for deicing aircraft and 11 hardstands, according to Tiger Infrastructure Partners’ Nov. 4 release. NorthLink aims to begin construction of the terminal by Spring 2022 and to “have hardstands available for customers by the end of the year,” Dolan said. The facility is set to be fully complete by summer 2023. Tiger Infrastructure Partners is a middle-market private equity firm that targets investments in communications, energy transition, transportation and more, according to the release. Both Tiger Infrastructure Partners and NorthLink, previously named IC Alaska Airport LLC, will fund the new air cargo terminal development at ANC using equity capital. E-commerce, personal protective equipment and displaced belly cargo has fueled the surge in cargo volumes at ANC, and has helped drive development at the airport. In addition to the new cargo terminal, Alaska Cargo and Cold Storage LLC (ACCS), a joint venture of Rocky Mountain Resources and McKinley Capital Management, plans to break ground on a 700,000-square-foot warehouse near ANC in Q4. Rocky Mountain Resources acquires and develops natural resource assets, and McKinley Capital is a private Alaskan firm that offers investment, research, consulting and advisory services across its network, according to the companies’ websites. Meanwhile, in June the Federal Aviation Administration also granted ANC $23 million under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 to help with the impact of COVID-19 on cargo operations. ANC ranked at No. 4 on Air Cargo World ’s Top 50 Cargo Airports ranking, based on 2020 throughput.
