People: Executives rising in air cargo

April saw several promotions and hirings at key companies in the air cargo industry. Leadership changes in DHL Supply Chain [caption id="attachment_57142972" align="alignright" width="298"] Clockwise from top left are Patrick Kelleher, Markus Voss, Mauricio Barros and Sally Miller.[/caption] DHL Supply Chain (DSC) announced in April the following changes, effective July 1, in its global leadership team: Patrick Kelleher becomes chief executive for DSC North America, succeeding the retiring Scott Sureddin ; Markus Voss becomes global chief development officer, succeeding Kelleher; Sally Miller becomes global chief information officer, succeeding Voss; and Mauricio Barros becomes global chief operations officer, also succeeding Voss. Kelleher, with DHL Group since 1992, has served as global chief development officer since 2018. Voss will lead the development of the business unit, overseeing the teams of service logistics, solutions design and all strategic growth products. Voss will continue as part of DSC’s global board of management. Voss’ former role will be split between Miller, chief information officer for North America and global digital transformation officer, and Barros, senior vice president of global operations. Miller, who will remain digital transformation officer, joined the company in 2005 and has held various senior management positions. Barros began his career with the group in Brazil in 2002 and has since held management roles across Latin America, including president of DSC Brazil. Miller and Barros will join DSC’s global board of management. Fluegeman becomes Ameriflight president, COO [caption id="attachment_57142958" align="alignright" width="225"] Patrick Fluegeman[/caption] Dallas-based cargo carrier Ameriflight appointed Patrick Fluegeman president and chief operating officer. He replaces Alan Rusinowitz , who was president, since March 2023. Rusinowitz, who was COO and later CEO, is now self-employed as an aviation expert. Fluegeman spent seven years with cargo carrier ABX Air , ending as chief operating officer, according to an April 25 release from Ameriflight. He previously held finance leadership roles with cargo airline Southern Air and financial services firm Deloitte . Fluegeman “is a well-established leader with an extensive background in the aviation industry that includes a unique blend of airline operations, corporate strategy, finance and business development,” Ameriflight owner and Chair Jim Martell said in the release. Scott named CEO of DB Schenker in UK, Ireland [caption id="attachment_57142940" align="alignright" width="184"] Aaron Scott[/caption] DB Schenker appointed Aaron Scott as chief executive for its United Kingdom and Ireland cluster. He succeeds Ray Hennessy , who has retired after eight years in the position. Scott joined the company in 2021 and is executive vice president of contract logistics for Europe, a role he will keep, according to an April 18 release from the company. Scott has more than 28 years’ experience in international and third-party logistics supply chain operations. Air Charter Service names Guibert head of Swiss office [caption id="attachment_57142942" align="alignright" width="262"] Arthur Guibert[/caption] Air Charter Service named Arthur Guibert chief executive for its office in Geneva, according to an April 24 release from the company. Prior to joining Air Charter Service in March, Guibert was head of business development at LunaJets . “After working for several years in the hospitality and aviation sectors in France, Belgium and the U.K., Arthur ... brings with him a wealth of experience across Europe, in both private jets and customer service, and will enhance our charter offering and bring the kind of leadership to take our Geneva office to the next step,” Air Charter Service Chairperson Chris Leach said in the release. Cargo iQ elects Chan, Hagelstein as new board members [caption id="attachment_57142955" align="alignright" width="149"] Olaf Hagelstein[/caption] [caption id="attachment_57142944" align="alignright" width="154"] Fanny Chan[/caption] Air cargo quality standards group Cargo iQ elected new board members in April, welcoming Fanny Chan , head of cargo global operations at Cathay Pacific , and Olaf Hagelstein , senior vice president and global head of operations, processes and systems airfreight at DHL Global Forwarding . Chan has worked at Cathay for more than 17 years in roles such as cargo products manager, cargo market development manager and assistant cargo revenue manager. Hagelstein, who has worked at DHL since 2019, previously worked at DB Schenker. Re-elected to the board were: Hendrik Leyssens , vice president of process, planning and project delivery at Emirates ; Jussi Lemola , vice president of global operations cargo at Swissport ; Rutger-Jan Pegels , director performance management at Air France KLM Martinair Cargo ; and Klaas Kurz , director aviation security and governance at DB Schenker. “These individuals bring with them a wealth of knowledge and valuable expertise that will help steer and advise our organization during a year of exciting changes,” Lothar Moehle, outgoing Cargo iQ executive director, said in an April 25 release from Cargo iQ. PML Seafrigo appoints Allen as airfreight director [caption id="attachment_57142957" align="alignright" width="209"] Paddie Allen[/caption] Freight forwarder PML Seafrigo welcomes Paddie Allen as airfreight director, a role in which he will head the company’s U.K. air cargo operations and oversee 22 staff members. Allen has spent 16 years in the logistics industry. He has served as regional general manager and U.K. airfreight and gateway manager at C.H. Robinson and as head of air and ocean U.K. at PSL Freight . “I’m delighted to be joining PML Seafrigo at ... a time when we are witnessing an upward trend in the use of airfreight services, especially for perishable goods, where speed and efficiency of transport are so vital to maximize the shelf life of temperature-sensitive goods,” Allen said in an April 23 release from the company. Giesen to head OBC services at Air Partner [caption id="attachment_57142956" align="alignright" width="222"] Oliver Giesen[/caption] Logistics provider Air Partner appointed Oliver Giesen as head of On Board Couriers (OBC) global. Air Partner aims to grow its OBC services, according to an April 8 release from the company. Giesen “will be based in his home country of Germany, which is a prominent manufacturing hub in Europe, ideally located for U.S.- and Asia-bound delivery services,” the release stated. Giesen will be responsible for identifying opportunities to drive OBC growth, specifically in the aerospace, automotive, fashion and pharmaceutical industries. He previously held roles at Sensos , InstaFreight , Neo Air Charter and Chapman Freeborn . “There are huge untapped opportunities for OBC services to fulfill, from high net-worth individuals and fashion houses to financial institutions and car manufacturers,” Pierre Van Der Stichele , vice president, global freight division, said in the release. “Door-to-door OBC services are of growing importance to those for whom safe and urgent delivery, by hand, of items is critical, such as sensitive documents, parts for cars to meet manufacturing deadlines and last-minute additions to the catwalk at global fashion shows.” Szentirmai, Weiner reinforce Vancouver team at deugro Canada [caption id="attachment_57142954" align="alignright" width="168"] Mike Weiner[/caption] [caption id="attachment_57142950" align="alignright" width="203"] Laszlo Szentirmai[/caption] Logistics company deugro Canada named Laszlo Szentirmai project manager and Mike Weiner sales and business development manager Canada at the company’s Vancouver, B.C., office. Working in the logistics industry since 2005, Szentirmai has nearly 20 years of logistics experience, including at Transera International and Panalpina , according to an April 30 release from deugro. In his new role, Szentirmai will be responsible for projects and clients across industries including liquefied natural gas, renewables, mining, construction, emissions and carbon capture, power generation, and oil and gas. Weiner started his career in the mid-1980s with operational roles in air cargo, ocean freight and trucking for various freight forwarders. He has held positions at DSV , JAS Worldwide and A & A Customs Brokers . “The strong experience of Laszlo and Mike will complement deugro’s specialized project logistics offerings to the unique Canadian market,” Kelly Merath , Canada country manager at deugro, said in the release. SASI World welcomes Perera [caption id="attachment_57142947" align="alignright" width="227"] Hiran Perera[/caption] Hiran Perera joined air cargo logistics advisory company SASI World as a senior adviser on freighters and revenue management, effective April 1. Perera previously served as a senior vice president at Emirates Sky Cargo , where he led the team responsible for all freighter activities, revenue and capacity management, according to a release from SASI World this month. “Today’s market dynamics in e-commerce and special products, where freighters remain the ideal platform for overall profitability, and how a mixed fleet of freighters and passenger aircraft can very often be the best solution for airlines, are subjects that I look forward to [exploring as I work] with the SASI World team and its clients,” Perera said in the release.
