People: New appointments within air cargo

The air cargo industry saw several appointments and promotions in November — and a couple of surprises. Cargojet appoints co-CEOs [caption id="attachment_57139397" align="alignright" width="182"] Jamie Porteous[/caption] [caption id="attachment_57139402" align="alignright" width="160"] Pauline Dhillon[/caption] Effective Jan. 1, Cargojet will be helmed by co-CEOS Pauline Dhillon , who is currently chief corporate officer, and Jamie Porteous , currently chief strategy officer. Current Chief Executive Ajay Virmani will become executive chair, the company announced Nov. 13. Dhillon, a founding member of the Cargojet team, has led several divisions with increasing responsibility, including marketing, brand, government relations, human resources, legal, facilities, operational efficiency and commercial operations. Porteous, also with CargoJet since it began 22 years ago, has served in leadership roles in the sales, customer relations, commercial strategy, operations, network planning and design, and investor relations divisions. “Their complementary skillset, long-standing dedication to our organization along with unwavering focus on our team, customers and stakeholders makes them the ideal strategic successors to lead us into a new era of innovation and growth while continuing to provide a seamless service to our customers,” Virmani said in the company’s release. Atlas’ Gonopolskiy drops ‘interim’ from CFO title [caption id="attachment_57139392" align="alignright" width="212"] Artem Gonopolskiy[/caption] Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings has appointed Artem Gonopolskiy executive vice president and chief financial officer, effective Dec. 1. Gonopolskiy, who has been with Atlas for nearly two decades, had served as interim CFO since mid-June, according to a Nov. 27 release from Atlas. He succeeded Spencer Schwartz , who retired June 15. Gonopolskiy joined Atlas in 2005 as a senior financial analyst and served as senior vice president of financial planning and analysis before being named interim CFO. Prior to joining Atlas, he was an analyst with ICF Consulting and a consultant with the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative . “Artem has been an integral member of our leadership team and has played a critical role in the company’s execution of key transactions throughout his tenure at Atlas. Most recently, Artem has been instrumental in driving the transformation of Atlas as a private company,” Atlas Chief Executive Michael Steen said in the release. Caldwell to head talent management at AIT [caption id="attachment_57139405" align="alignright" width="162"] Susan Caldwell[/caption] AIT Worldwide Logistics welcomed Susan Caldwell as vice president of talent management for the company’s North America region in early November. Caldwell will design and execute strategies to develop talent, engage teamwork, manage performance and optimize management and communications, according to a release from AIT. She reports to Chief Human Resources Officer Angela Mancuso . “Susan is an instrumental hire for us at a pivotal time of global growth for AIT ,” Mancuso said in the release. “Her bilingual proficiency, combined with her depth of experience across various sectors, positions us to further enhance our HR initiatives, talent management practices and overall employee experience in the North America region.” Van Oord to helm Schiphol [caption id="attachment_57139403" align="alignright" width="195"] Pieter van Oord[/caption] The Royal Schiphol Group announced Nov. 26 that Pieter van Oord will become chief executive, effective June 1, 2024, with his appointment to run through June 1, 2028. Van Oord has managed Royal Van Oord , an international maritime contractor, since 2008. Van Oord will succeed Ruud Sondag , who has served as interim CEO since November 2022. Sondag will stay on until March 1, 2024, at which time Chief Financial Officer Robert Carsouw will serve as interim CEO until van Oord begins one month later. Dick Benschop stepped down as CEO in September 2022 following criticisms regarding long security lines for passenger travel and other managerial concerns. Van Oord “has extensive experience in the field of logistics operations and asset management, two areas in which there will be significant challenges for Schiphol in the coming years,” Jaap Winter , chair of Royal Schiphol Group’s supervisory board, said in the release. “For Pieter, sustainability is a key issue. This is in line with Schiphol’s ambitions to accelerate sustainability and reduce its environmental and climate impact.” Tam to direct cargo for ACS in Greater China [caption id="attachment_57139406" align="alignright" width="234"] Joseph Tam[/caption] Air Charter Service (ACS) promoted Joseph Tam to regional cargo director for the company’s newly defined Greater China region, according to a Nov. 15 release from ACS. Tam has been with ACS for 12 years and is based out of Hong Kong. “In his new role, Joseph will be working even more closely with our cargo teams in both Shanghai and Beijing, as well as in his own Hong Kong,” ACS Chief Executive Justin Bowman said in the release. “We will be looking to strengthen the team in the region further in the new year, as we look to develop our already substantial presence in Greater China.” Polmans retains chair at TIACA [caption id="attachment_57139404" align="alignright" width="167"] Steven Polmans[/caption] Following executive elections for its 2024-2025 term, TIACA announced Nov. 14 that Steven Polmans was re-elected for his third two-year term as chairperson. A change to TIACA’s governance rules allowed two vice chairs to be elected: Emir Pineda and Roos Bakker . Polmans, a self-employed air cargo expert, has served as head of cargo and logistics at BRU, was founding chair of Air Cargo Belgium and was the carrier’s director of cargo and logistics. HE has also been Nallian’s chief customs officer and in 2022 became vice president at the Abu Dhabi Airport Co. “I eagerly anticipate carrying out the directives set forth by the board, maintaining a focus on membership, advocacy, partnerships, knowledge, sustainability and events,” Polmans said in a TIACA release. Meanwhile, Pineda is director of marketing and air service development at Miami International Airport (MIA) and Bakker is director of business development cargo at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS).
