Qatar Airways Cargo digitalizes mail system

This week, Qatar Airways Cargo joined the ranks of logistics industry members investing in the digitalization of processes, rolling out its paper-free mail management system service at more than 50 stations throughout its network.

The carrier contracted the services of Canadian logistics software-as-a-service company, Descartes, which works with air and ground carriers to replace paper-based processes. The integration of Descartes software into the carrier’s in-house cargo management system completely automates its supply chain, from origin to final destination, and eliminates the need to enter data manually.

The cargo carrier said that its airmail transport tonnage, underpinned by demand for e-commerce, increased by 40 percent in between its 2017-18 and 2016-17 fiscal years.

Qatar Airways Cargo has been working to digitalize its network since October 2017, starting with communication between postal entities and the airline. The carrier said that there are “promising prospects” underway at its dedicated Airmail Unit at the Doha hub, where it processes more than 100 tonnes of international airmail per day, namely investments in process automation.
