Quantum-South ULD-loading tech available on IATA API

Software solutions provider Quantum-South ’s technology for cargo bin loading is available as of Dec. 14 on IATA ’s open API hub, which shares resources with airline operators and gives access to data for collaboration with other users. [caption id="attachment_57137226" align="alignleft" width="300"] (Photo/Can Stock)[/caption] Quantum’s Automatic Package Selecting and Ordering (APSO) technology is designed for air cargo customers to organize cargo more efficiently into unit load devices (ULD) with the aim of cutting costs and saving time. Trials by IAG Cargo and Amerijet showed a 30% capacity utilization increase, according to a release by Quantum-South. Amerijet trialed the technology during the summer. “This substantial enhancement in cargo load factor can greatly enhance revenue per flight and increase opportunities for customers through more efficient use of capacity,” Eric Wilson , Amerijet’s chief commercial officer, said in a release at the time. The APSO software uses quantum computing to optimize the process of cargo bin loading, Martin Machin , co-founder of Quantum-South, told Air Cargo Next . Quantum computing combines computer science, physics, mathematics and quantum mechanics to solve problems more quickly than traditional computing solutions. “The biggest benefit of having this software solution available on IATA’s API ecosystem is that companies can access the solution, play and test it,” Machin said. “Although the free access is limited, it is more than enough to understand how it works, what is its scope, what data is needed to run it.” Quantum-South cof-founders Machin and Rafael Sotelo are among Air Cargo Next ’s 12 executives to watch in the air cargo industry. Factors to consider Cargo load optimization requires consideration of many factors, Machin said. “In an ideal world, companies need to work on data availability at the right time,” Mateo Stipanicic , cargo product lead at Quantum-South, told Air Cargo Next . Packaging, dimensions and weight play into the integration of relevant data for optimization as well, he said. These include “revenue associated, customer priority and proper cargo handling codes,” Stipanicic said. “That’s key data to take things from warehouses to a set of ULDs and pallets. The output of our solutions help terminal ground teams to do the pickup of the items from the warehouse and take them to the ULD or pallet’s locations.” However, air cargo operates in a nonlinear fashion and cargo loading is rarely ideal, Stipanicic said. “Many times, you have to prepare the ULDs and pallets with what you have and do your best,” he said. “We can help to optimize what is already there for sure, but the overall load is not fully optimized at the end. You don’t have time, and the plane must take off on time. “So, there are challenges in the balance of legacy systems and data integration and practical operational scenarios at the terminal.” Cargo optimization through APSO has some sustainability benefits as well, Stipanicic said. This includes fuel reduction and fewer cargo flights due to strategic packaging, he said. “Quantum-South’s solution has the potential to bring significant benefits to our operations, increase revenues and reduce emissions,” Amerijet’s Wilson said.
