Raya Airways to use Kuala Lumpur-Nanning route as Southeast Asia gateway

Malaysia-based cargo carrier Raya Airways launched its four-times-weekly service between Kuala Lumpur (SZB) and Nanning (NGG) on June 13, using a 767-200F aircraft to provide a gateway to other Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) destinations. [caption id="attachment_66160" align="alignright" width="356"] Photo: Raya Airways[/caption] Raya Airways is the first Malaysian cargo carrier to expand its services to NGG, Mohamad Najib Ishak, group managing director for the carrier, told Air Cargo World . The route seeks to transport primarily cross-border e-commerce products, consumer goods and some perishables, and has a maximum capacity of 40 tonnes, said Ishak. “Our aim is in linking Malaysia with China, which is integral in order to support increased demand for trade and e-commerce transactions in both countries, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Ishak. “Guangxi is also enhancing its ports’ handling capacity and links with the hinterland [and] is also looking to build Nanning into an integrated transport hub.” While Raya Airways has operated the route using two of its aircraft, the route is primarily being operated with one 767-200F for now, according to flight tracking software. Ishak further noted that demand for express shipments within Southwest Asia continues to grow rapidly and full-freight carriers are undertaking increased cargo operations. In fact, the carrier hopes to gradually increase the frequency of the SZB-NNG route to support the increasing cargo demand, said Ishak. “In meeting the rising demand, we inducted another 767-200F aircraft into our fleet in April 2021 to increase our flight frequency and improve connectivity to and from Malaysia,” said Ishak. “The accelerated growth of e-commerce was a significant factor in this decision.” Currently, Raya Airways’ fleet consists of three 767-200F aircraft and one B737-400F aircraft, said Ishak. He further noted that the carrier’s regional network currently consists of more than 300 flights per month to eight destinations in six countries, including Jakarta (CGK), Ho Chi Minh (SGN) and Hong Kong (HKG). Raya Airways also serves various destinations in East Malaysia, including Kota Kinabalu (BKI), Kuching (KCH) and Labuan (LBU).
