Rumored Atlas sale reflects value of large-widebody freighters

The rumored sale of Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings by Apollo Global Management for over $12 billion reflects the state of the industry and the value of large-widebody freighters in today’s market. Atlas Air’s wholly owned fleet includes 113 aircraft plus an additional twenty in subsidiary Titan Aviation Leasing’s portfolio, which is owned under a joint venture with Bain Capital , Atlas confirmed to Cargo Facts . (Photo/Cargo Facts)[/caption] The 113 aircraft include: Seventy-eight widebody freighters; Twenty-five aircraft in Titan’s own portfolio; and Ten passenger aircraft. $7.6B fleet estimate Atlas Air is the world’s largest 747 freighter operator, with seventeen of those seventy-eight widebodies being 747-8Fs and the rest being 747-400, 777 and 767-300 freighters. Aircraft appraisal consultancy Ascend by Cirium estimates the full-life market value of the combined Atlas and Titan-managed portfolio to be approximately $7.6 billion, Head of Valuations George Dimitroff told Cargo Facts . The rumored $12 billion asking price is more than double the $5.2 billion that an Apollo-led consortium paid to buy Atlas in 2023 . That is likely a business valuation — as opposed to a simple fleet valuation — and takes into account: The value of fully owned assets; The discounted cash flow value of Titan’s contracted leases to airlines other than Atlas; The discounted cash flow value of lease-end return compensation contractually owed to Titan from its leased assets; The discounted cash flow value of Atlas’ contracted revenues from long-term third-party work; and Other revenue streams of the holdings group that add value to its sale price. Doubling Apollo’s investment Apollo apparently hopes to double its original investment, which is common among private equity companies, Doug Kelly, chief executive of appraisal firm Avitas, told Cargo Facts . Many private equity firms would be capable of paying the $12 billion, he added. Since going private in 2023 , Atlas has: Bought several 747-8Fs and 747-400Fs, Taken delivery of five new 777Fs directly from Boeing; and Continued to grow its diverse customer base of airlines, integrators, shipping and logistics groups, forwarders and e-commerce players. Holding 747 and 777 freighters has become more lucrative due to the shortage of widebody freighters, conversion and certification delays , and Airbus’ A350F not entering service until 2027 and Boeing’s 777-8F in 2029. Meanwhile, Titan has set up a second leasing fund with Bain and expanded into Airbus freighters . The group is due to open an MRO site in Seoul (ICN) under a joint venture with Sharp K Technics this year. Apollo’s potential sale of Atlas would not be the only recent major acquisition in the freighter space. ATSG, whose subsidiaries include the world’s largest freighter lessor CAM and two freighter operators ABX Air and Air Transport International, went private in 2025 after private equity firm Stonepeak bought it for $3.1 billion .
