Silk Way West to share capacity with JAL Cargo

Azerbaijan-based Silk Way West and Japan Airlines subsidiary JAL Cargo have released news of a new cooperation to allow JAL Cargo’s use of Silk Way West’s airfreight capacity on flights between Azerbaijan and Japan.

Silk Way West said it plans to bump the frequency of its Baku-Komatsu route it from three to four weekly operations, and increasing capacity on routes out of Europe via Baku to Japan.

Vice president for APAC at Silk Way West, Nurid Aliyev, said the airline forged a similar relationship with Malaysia Airlines Cargo, which, like JAL, also ended its full-freighter operations. “As our global hub is perfectly located along the ancient Silk Road, our geographical position is at the crossroads between orient and occident,” Aliyev said.

Earlier this year, the Azerbaijani carrier invested in inter-European trade, re-launching services out of Budapest Airport and adding twice-weekly flights between Liège Airport and its Baku hub. It also recently added two more 747-400Fs, expanding its freighter fleet to twelve.
