Vietnam bans recalled and damaged lithium batteries on flights

Vietnam will ban damaged and recalled lithium batteries, as well as electronic devices using those batteries, on Vietnamese airlines as well as foreign airlines operating into and from Vietnam, the country’s Civil Aviation Authority announced in a statement this month. The ban will begin as of Nov. 15.

The ban will affect both devices with the recalled batteries installed carried by airline passengers and those shipped as air cargo. Russia-based Aeroflot Cargo also reminded customers in a notice on Monday that the ban covers damaged batteries and batteries identified by the manufacturer as defective or recalled, “as well as lithium batteries in equipment or packed with equipment.”

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam advised port authorities and representatives to increase supervision of such shipments and to work closely with agencies and stakeholders in implementing the ban.
