Dachser adds second Europe-US weekly flight

The U.S. subsidiary of Germany-based forwarder Dachser is increasing its Europe-U.S. airfreight service due to demand, adding a midweek flight between Frankfurt (FRA) and Chicago (ORD) using an American Airlines-operated 777 passenger freighter. Photo/O'Hare International Airport[/caption] The 777 operation is in addition to Dachser’s current FRA-ORD offering, which utilizes a 747-400 freighter departing FRA on Saturdays, according to a release from the company. Dachser launched that service in July 2020, in a deal that Andy Frommenwiler, vice president of air freight USA at Dachser USA Air & Sea Logistics, told Air Cargo World has been extended through the end of 2021, “subject to market development.” Last year, trans-Atlantic demand into the U.S. was particularly high for commodities, including engineering and manufactured goods such as machinery parts and spare parts. Demand into ORD could have supported an additional frequency at the time, Frommenwiler said in a December interview , but demand on the return leg to FRA was less robust. That has changed during the first quarter of 2021. “The market has picked up over the past few weeks and we have seen an increase in demand from the U.S. to Europe on our flights,” he said today. The same commodity types that drove demand for the 747F are likely to move via the passenger freighter, Frommenwiler added. Dachser reported that many customers have shifted ocean shipments to air transportation, due to widespread uncertainty and container shortages that have affected ocean freight into the U.S. The FRA-ORD 747F service is operating at full capacity, and the new passenger-freighter service has already seen interest from new customers, Frommenwiler said in today’s press release. Dachser Air & Sea Logistics was ranked No. 17 among Air Cargo World ’s Power 25 ranking of the world’s top airfreight forwarders , based on 2019 volumes.
