DHL breaks ground on Hanover transshipment facility

DHL Freight broke ground on its 8,300-square-meter Langenhagen transshipment facility, near Hanover, which will serve as a hub for organizing and consolidating cargo for the company’s European client network. The logistics giant released plans of its intent to build the facility in fall of last year as part of its “Freight 2020” initiative.

The company plans to employ a workforce of 260 while utilizing automated technology, like camera-equipped forklifts that scan goods and route-optimization software to guide drivers through the warehouse, as well as volume-measuring cameras that are six times faster than standard hand-measuring methods.

The location will also play a key role in its full truckload (FTL) service, the company said, absorbing its Stelingerstrasse and Büttnerstrasse locations in Hanover, and optimizing its regional logistics operations.
