Amazon Air is first tenant at MHT cargo facility

Amazon Air flew its inaugural 767-300 freighter flight from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) to Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) on Thursday, marking the start of the carrier’s new daily service to MHT. The e-commerce company is the first tenant in MHT’s new cargo facility . The 65,000-square-foot space, built by real estate developer Realterm, has parking positions for three widebody aircraft with the option to expand for a fourth, according to a Nov. 17 MHT release. "Enhancing our air cargo facilities with the introduction of Amazon Air underscores the economic development that is occurring not only in Manchester but throughout New Hampshire and northern New England.” The area boasts more than 4 million additional square feet of distribution centers planned within 20 miles of MHT, allowing for further e-commerce expansion, Kitchens shared in a 2021 release . Amazon leases 55,000 square feet of the facility, with another 10,000 square feet available for other tenants, a MHT spokesperson told Air Cargo World. Amazon is also using two of the three aircraft parking spaces, as well. Amazon joins FedEx Express, UPS and Wiggins Airways as the latest carrier at MHT. Year-to-date, MHT has processed 64,854 tonnes of cargo and saw 93,843 tonnes in 2021, more than all the other regional New England airports the spokesperson said . Looking forward, MHT is conducting a survey to assess opportunities for additional cargo development, which the airport expects to be completed in the next few months, the spokesperson added. Amazon goes north Amazon Air’s network in Northeastern U.S. and New England “remains riddled with complexity,” according to a September report from DePaul University . The carrier flies 18 daily flights to Windsor Locks-Bradley International (BDL) near Hartford, Conn., and 10 daily flights to Thurgood Marshall Baltimore-Washington International (BWI). Other destinations include Pittsburgh (PIT) , Richmond (RIC), Allentown Lehigh Valley (ABE) and New York (JFK) , according to DePaul’s report. The e-tailer had planned to expand operations at Newark (EWR) but could not reach an agreement on lease terms with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Amazon is the fourth-largest customer for aircraft capacity behind FedEx, UPS and DHL Express, according to Cargo Facts Consulting’s 2022 Global E-commerce Logistics Outlook . Amazon Air’s 110-strong freighter fleet includes 767-300, 767-200, 737-800 and A330-300P2F aircraft, according to Air Cargo World’s sister publication Cargo Facts . Most recently, Amazon established partnerships with Azul Cargo for Brazilian capacity and with Hawaiian Airlines to operate its incoming A330s in October.
