DHL Express expands, relocates to Richmond, Va.

DHL Express is relocating its facilities in central Virginia to a larger location closer to Richmond International Airport (RIC) and investing $7 million into the new location. Located less than one mile from RIC, the new DHL facility will be 87% larger than its current base in nearby Henrico County, according to a company release. DHL anticipates the expansion will enable it to “better serve the greater Richmond market’s international shipping needs with improved delivery times,” Richard Saavedra, vice president and general manager for Southeast U.S. at DHL Express, said in the statement. The new facility is slated to handle both domestic U.S. and time-definite international shipments, aided by new technologies such as electric pickup and delivery vehicles and warehouse charging stations, according to the release. [caption id="attachment_57065673" align="alignright" width="483"] Photo/DHL[/caption] “We are staying within the Richmond area which continues to see growth from international importers and exporters,” said Robert Mintz, senior manager for communications at DHL. The location provides a total of 40 pickup and delivery vehicle load positions, and its advanced material handling system can process up to 3,900 pieces per hour. “The new location in the airport area is heartily welcomed,” Richmond International Airport’s Director of Marketing and Air Service Development Troy Bell told Air Cargo World . DHL’s expansion and relocation are taking place as RIC has increased its own cargo infrastructure in accordance with the airport’s most recent 20-year master plan from 2010. “RIC’s work supporting DHL is an expansion of the public ramp available on the east side to the extent it can accommodate larger aircraft, such as 767 freighters,” Bell said. “We would welcome the opportunity to meet any on-airport needs for DHL as the company grows in the Richmond region.” DHL joins cargo operators FedEx, UPS and Amazon at RIC, which handled 180 million pounds of cargo in 2021, the airport reported. In 2014 the airport was designated as a Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) by the U.S Department of Commerce. RIC's designation as an FTZ permits businesses not to pay duties on imported goods that are later exported, as well as a few other cost-saving measures such as the removal of state and local inventory tax, and delay of payment on duties. Meanwhile, earlier this month, DHL Global Forwarding expanded its warehouse footprint, adding $12 million into a new 4,880-square-foot facility at Brisbane Airport . Other cargo stakeholders have also been investing in new cargo facilities, including World Distribution Services which established new 480,000-square-foot facilities in Newark.
