FedEx parks remaining MD-10s

After nearly thirty years, FedEx Express has parked its remaining McDonnell Douglas MD-10-30F fleet, ending operations with the type. None of the eight aircraft have moved since the end of 2022, and one (46837) was ferried to Victorville (VCV) on Dec. 30. (Photo/FedEx)[/caption] All flights most recently operated by the aircraft now appear to be scheduled with either MD-11Fs or 767-300Fs. FedEx’s fleet of MD-10Fs, once seventy-five strong, had dwindled to only eight by the fourth quarter of 2022, and those averaged just under forty years in age. The integrator retired all its MD-10-10Fs in 2021 . The MD-10-30Fs were parked shortly after FedEx announced that it would place eleven more aircraft into storage by the end of its 2023 fiscal year . The company expected to retire all remaining eight MD-10-30Fs by June 30, 2023, according to its Statistical Book for Q2 fiscal 2023. FedEx declined to comment. The only other MD-10-30F operator is Transportes Aereos Bolivianos, which has not flown its single unit (48312) since Dec. 31. Apart from the MD-10-30Fs, FedEx is also parking some of its narrowbody freighters , recently placing at least two 757-200Fs (25490 and 25253) into storage at VCV since Nov ember. New strategies The removal of excess capacity is part of an overall strategy for the express carrier to cut costs amid slowing demand and a tighter labor market . Meanwhile, FedEx is taking delivery of new 777Fs and 767-300Fs to replace its older aircraft and still has outstanding orders for at least six additional 777Fs and more than twenty-five 767-300Fs from Boeing, with options for twenty-three and fifty more, respectively. The express carrier has invested in new regional freighter types, taking delivery of the world’s first Cessna SkyCourier and placing it with Mountain Air Cargo , as well as drone platforms such as Elroy Air’s Chaparral C1 drone . FedEx last year also began feeder ops with AirDialog , which is an effort from Reliable Robotics to help certify a pilotless Cessna 208 platform for future unmanned aircraft platforms.
