Texel takes tenth 737-800 freighter across its AOCs

Texel Air has expanded its fleet to ten 737-800BCFs across its New Zealand and Bahrain AOCs. Texel Air Australasia’s seventh 737-800BCF, the 2008-vintage unit 36601, is the 200th 737-800BCF that Boeing has completed, according to an Oct. 10 release from Texel. (Courtesy/Texel Air Australasia)[/caption] The other three 737-800BCFs are with Texel Air’s Bahrain subsidiary, which also includes two 737-700 FlexCombis. Texel does not plan to add any more freighters to its fleet this year, George Chisholm, chief executive of Texel parent Chisholm Enterprises, told Cargo Facts . But he said the company expects to further expand its fleet in 2027. On lease from BBAM, unit 36601 exited passenger service with Virgin Australia a year ago and was sent to the STAECO facility in Jinan, China (TNA), in December 2025 ahead of conversion. It arrived in Auckland, New Zealand (AKL), on Oct. 6. Unit 36601 is the third freighter that Texel Air Australasia will deploy within New Zealand. Together with unit 33013, which began flying between AKL, Christchurch (CHC) and Palmerston North (PMR) in August, they represent a combined investment of NZ$95 million ($53 million), the carrier said in the release. Unit 29985 also flies to CHC, AKL, and PMR. The Australian and New Zealand freighter markets are tight, Johan Sandahl, senior vice president for the Asia-Pacific region at freight wholesaler Air Menzies International, told Cargo Facts . “Any new capacity on [these routes is] beneficial for the freight forwarding market,” he said. The rest of Texel Air Australasia’s freighters are in service in Australia. In July, Texel was among the first carriers to begin freighter operations at the new twenty-four hour cargo precinct at Western Sydney International Airport (WSI). At the time, Chisholm told Cargo Facts that Texel would base one of its freighters at WSI for charter operations, although none of the freighters in Texel Air Australasia's fleet have operated regularly out of WSI since at least early September, according to flight tracking data. 737-800 freighter transactions There have been several significant transactions so far this year involving the Boeing 737-800BCF conversion. Amazon in January transferred two 737-800BCFs to Sun Country Airlines from ASL Airlines Ireland, raising the total of 737-800BCFs that Sun Country operates for Amazon to twenty-two. Meanwhile, K2 Aviation in June acquired two 737-800BCFs , marking that operator’s entry into the freighter segment. In July, ASL Aviation Holdings received the 2003-vintage unit 33719, its first 737-800BCF and Boeing-converted narrowbody of the year. Lastly, Alaska Air Group will soon start flying an ex-WestJet 737-800BCF .
