National Nuclear Security Administration acquires 737-700 FlexCombi

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a U.S. government agency charged with safeguarding national security through the military application of nuclear science, has acquired a 737-700 FlexCombi and will soon be the second operator of the type. The NNSA acquired the 2008-vintage unit 29645 (ex-Delta Air Lines) from AAR Government Services on Oct. 14, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) registry. (Photo/NNSA)[/caption] Unit 29645 was converted with PEMCO Conversions at its facility in Tampa (TPA) after arriving there in September 2021. Cargo Facts reported at the time that AAR had become the second customer for the 737-700 FlexCombi conversion program . The NNSA, which currently has two PEMCO-converted 737-400 Combis (24750 and 24493), confirmed to Cargo Facts that it had filed a solicitation to purchase a 737-700 FlexCombi in April 2021 but could not provide further details. The administration requested its contractor convert a 737-700 to a FlexCombi with aft airstairs and three different main-deck freight and passenger configurations, according to the solicitation. Unit 29645 was seen on flight-tracking software departing TPA in May for Oklahoma City (OKC) where the aircraft remained until a test flight on Oct. 6. The 737-700 has not been tracked since. The aircraft is the third 737-700FC PEMCO conversion, following units 30293 (ex-Yakutia Airlines) and 34170 (ex-Transavia), which both now fly for Texel Air . Delta had removed unit 29645 from its own inventory in 2020. For its part, Texel Air signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) last week with Sierra Nevada Corporation to grow the airline’s fleet to at least five 737-800BCFs. PEMCO conversions The FAA issued a supplemental type certificate (STC) to PEMCO for its 737-700 FlexCombi conversion in 2020. Apart from the 737-700FC, PEMCO earlier this year completed its first A321PCF conversion for 321 Precision Conversions with the redelivery of unit 775 to Cross Ocean Partners for operation with Smart Lynx , and is currently working on at least one or two A321PCFs that will soon be redelivered to Cargo Aircraft Management (CAM).
