Janco’s Hong Kong facility approved for cargo screening

Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department (CAD) has approved forwarder Janco Holdings Ltd.’s air cargo facility as a Registered Air Cargo Scanning Facility (RACSF). The facility scanned its first package this week, according to a LinkedIn post from company founder Clarence Cheng . Photo/Janco Holdings[/caption] The facility is located in Hong Kong’s Lau Fau Shan district, 26 km. from Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). It is equipped with a Rapiscan X-ray system — which can recognize dangerous substances like explosives and narcotics with little risk of human error — in order to meet the safety requirements of the CAD. Janco’s facility may process primarily e-commerce shipments, as the forwarder typically specializes in cross-border e-commerce shipments between mainland China and the rest of the world. In June 2020, Janco’s e-commerce operation processed more than 600,000 cross-border online orders during the 618 midyear shopping festival, celebrated primarily in China. And on Singles Day 2020, the forwarder processed more than 500,000 orders headed for mainland China, according to a press release from the company. CAD implemented the RACSF initiative in 2018 to meet new policy directives of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) going into effect this year. The policy requires all air cargo to be screened regardless of whether it flies on passenger or freighter aircraft. However, the policy allows screening facilities to be located outside airport grounds in order to reduce terminal demand and congestion. As of Jan. 6, there are 130 RACSFs in Hong Kong including the Janco facility, according to the CAD’s website.
