Kabul to Mumbai cargo service kicks off with perishables delivery

A flight carrying 40 tonnes of fresh apples arrived at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) on Dec. 27, marking the first flight to Mumbai on the new dedicated airfreight corridor between India and Afghanistan, India’s IANS newswire reported.

After delivering its haul of perishables to Mumbai, the flight returned on Thursday to Kabul with a cargo of 20 tonnes of bananas and 20 tonnes of tomatoes.

The new airfreight corridor was planned when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani in September 2016, according to IANS. The first flight from Afghanistan into India took place in June with a cargo of medicinal plants, but this week’s delivery marks the first between the two cities.
