New Qatar Airways flights to Namibia a boon for exporters, tourism

Qatar Airways launched a four-times-weekly route between Doha and Windhoek, Namibia, this week that will add 92 tonnes of bellyhold capacity per week on board the carrier’s 787 passenger aircraft.

While the lion’s share of Namibian exports reach only as far as neighboring countries such as South Africa and Botswana, Europe and North American markets are growing in importance as well. Namibia is also a major diamond exporter.

Qatar’s presence will allow Namibian businesses to distribute goods across the airline’s network of more than 150 destinations. The new route is a continuation of Qatar’s expansion into Africa. Windhoek is the 23rd destination route that Qatar offers to the continent.

Namibia’s economy is largely tourism-reliant, and the carrier used the launch to underscore its role in facilitating the sector’s growth, said Qatar Airways Group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker.
