US air cargo airport upgrades propel global commerce

The rise of e-commerce has led to higher demand for swift, dependable shipping solutions. With next-day delivery becoming the new norm, air cargo assumes a central role in delivering goods ordered online to consumers on a global scale, thereby contributing significantly to the flourishing e-commerce industry. Airport modernization is critical to improving the efficiency of air cargo operations, reducing handling times, delays, and fuel consumption, leading to cost savings for both carriers and shippers and making air cargo a more attractive option for certain types of goods. There are many projects currently underway around the globe, including the following in the United States: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) LAX has embarked on an ambitious expansion of its air cargo facilities to meet growing demand under its Cargo Modernization Program. This project is in its early stages; timelines and specific budgets have not yet been determined. Once the pre-development phase is completed and a final decision to proceed is made, the specifics will be determined and released. The initiative includes the construction of new cargo terminals and the modernization of 27 existing facilities ranging in age from 20 to 80 years, which collectively comprise 2.6 million square feet. Skylark Consulting Group forecasts that air cargo throughput in the Los Angeles region will increase at a compound annual growth rate of 2.6%, from 3.6 million tonnes in 2022, to reach 7.7 million tonnes by 2045. Notably, the 2022 figures and estimate also include data from Ontario (Calif.) International Airport. To accommodate this growth, LAX will need to make a multi-billion dollar investment. Complicating matters is LAX's location, as it is bordered by fully developed neighborhoods and the Pacific Ocean. In 2023, Los Angeles World Airports, the authority overseeing LAX, selected LAX Community Partners to lead the development of the Cargo Modernization Program. Ricondo & Associates was chosen to lead the environmental, technical, and expert consulting aspects of the project. [caption id="attachment_57283646" align="aligncenter" width="480"] Photo credit: Los Angeles World Airports[/caption] Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) ORD, the sixth-busiest airport in the U.S. by metric tonnes of cargo handled (2.2 million metric tonnes), has several ongoing cargo infrastructure projects. Airport developer Realterm in June completed a 132,000-square-foot air cargo facility with an additional 200,000 square feet of ramp space in ORD’s Northeast Cargo Area. Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) has signed a 15-year lease to operate this state-of-the-art facility. However, when the facility opened in the spring, it faced a hiccup: The ramp remained inaccessible to freighter aircraft due to a taxiway connection left unfinished by the city’s Department of Aviation. This led WFS to temporarily incur higher operating expenses as shipments had to be trucked from another part of the airport, until the taxiway was completed in July. Miami International Airport (MIA) MIA has seen significant growth in its cargo operations, reaching a record 2.50 million tonnes This success is credited to its extensive airline and air route network, which includes 100 airlines serving multiple nonstop markets globally. To sustain this growth, MIA must invest in expansion. With limited undeveloped land, MIA is opting for a five-story warehouse, known as the Vertically Integrated Cargo Community. This public-private partnership is slated for completion in 2027 and aims to increase the airport's cargo capacity to about 4.98 million tonnes per year. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW ) DFW , ranked 10 th in the nation by metric tonnes of cargo handled in 2022 (818 thousand metric tonnes), plans to overhaul its 19th Street cargo facility to enhance its international e-commerce processing capabilities and overall cargo capacity. Expected to be completed in late 2024, the project will add approximately 350,000 square feet of warehouse space and seven ADG VI (large cargo aircraft) parking spaces. This development will also incorporate advanced technology to tackle challenges like labor shortages, airport congestion, and sustainability. Menzies Aviation and dnata USA have been tentatively selected as operators for the new warehouses, pending approval from the DFW board of directors. This aligns with DFW’s broader vision of solidifying its role as a global transit hub, with a focus on high-growth markets such as pharmaceuticals and cross-border e-commerce. Both Menzies Aviation and dnata are committed to delivering innovative and technologically advanced solutions at these new facilities. John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) JFK , once a leading air-cargo hub, has seen its rank drop to eighth in 2022 in tonnes of cargo handled (1,4 million tonnes). This is a far cry from its glory days of 2000 when it ranked third in the U.S. A study by Rutgers University underscores critical issues at JFK, with 95% of industry stakeholders rating truck wait times as “poor” or “extremely poor”. The study also concluded that these delays are primarily attributed to inefficient dock scheduling and congestion. However, a proposed truck flow management system could alleviate these issues, potentially reducing truck dwell time by 38% and generating annual savings of up to $16 million. The JFK Vision Plan aims to modernize airport operations to meet growing air freight demands. A key component to this plan for 2024 is a new cargo building: The $145 million Aeroterm air cargo facility will be JFK's first new cargo terminal in two decades. The new terminal replaces two outdated facilities with one state-of-the-art building designed for efficient storage and handling, including a temperature-controlled area for pharmaceuticals. Its strategic location close to the populous metropolitan area, the Port of New Jersey and the Port of New York makes it a commercial hub for last-mile distribution. U.S. airports lead the way in air cargo upgrades Air cargo infrastructure expansion and modernization are crucial for ensuring the efficient movement of goods and the continued growth of the air cargo industry in the U.S. As U.S. hubs take significant steps to enhance their cargo capabilities to meet rising demand, their efforts not only expand cargo capacity but also prioritize sustainability and operational efficiency.
