From production to P2F: the next decade for ATR

ATR72-600F demand through the next decade is real, but the market should be read through fleet replacement, operator economics and account-level capture. Cargo Facts Consulting’s base-case forecasts around 66 ATR72-600F additions from 2026 through 2036, including 41 new-build aircraft and 25 ATR72-600 P2F conversions. The forecast range runs from 45 aircraft in the low case to 100 in the high case, depending on follow-on production demand, conversion execution and competitive leakage to other platforms. Replacement sets market The regional feeder market is growing, but slowly. CFC’s long-term forecast shows the active feeder fleet rising from 328 aircraft in the first quarter of 2026 to 392 by 2045, a net increase of 64 aircraft. The larger requirement comes from fleet replacement. By 2045, 248 aircraft from the current fleet are expected to retire or exit, which creates a gross supply need of 312 aircraft when net growth is included. In Figure 1, we see a market shaped mainly by replacement, with conversions and new production rebuilding the fleet over time. Figure 1: Feeder Freighter Forecast Fleet Development 2026-2045

The age profile of the current ATR freighter fleet supports this view. ATR42-300Fs are concentrated mainly in the 33- to 40-year range, while ATR72-200Fs are clustered at 30 to 36 years. ATR72-500Fs are younger, but many are already in their twenties. The ATR72-600F fleet is the outlier, with most aircraft still early in their cargo lives. Figure 2 shows the split clearly: Older ATR variants create the replacement pool, while the -600F represents the modernized end state for operators that need ATR payload and range. This does not mean every aging ATR turns into a new ATR72-600F order. Operators can extend aircraft, move to used ATR72-500Fs, convert passenger aircraft, shift freight to road on short sectors or use smaller aircraft where payload is limited. The replacement signal is strongest where routes are dense enough for ATR economics but too thin for narrowbody freighters. It is also strongest where contract structure rewards reliability and schedule completion, especially in express feeder networks. Production leads the near term Production demand is anchored by FedEx and its feeder network. CFC has identified 16 remaining firm FedEx ATR72-600F deliveries and 10 options, with the firm backlog supporting production through FY2030. Those aircraft are expected to flow through existing CMI feeder partners such as Mountain Air Cargo , Empire , ASL , Swiftair and Gulf & Caribbean . These operators fly ATR freighters, so incremental aircraft are tied to commonality, dispatch reliability and network standardization. In the base case, production leads the first half of the forecast. CFC forecasts 24 new-build ATR72-600Fs and eight conversions through 2030. From 2031 through 2036, production continues at a lower rate while conversions become a larger part of supply. Figure 3 shows this shift year by year. Production remains a factor after 2030, but the annual volume becomes more selective as the FedEx backlog is absorbed. The new-build case is strongest on high-utilization express routes where aircraft downtime is expensive and where operators value OEM support, warranty coverage and longer remaining life. These factors are harder to price than acquisition cost, but they drive aircraft decisions in networks that depend on performance. For lower-utilization operators, the higher cost of a production ATR72-600F is harder to justify, and that shifts more demand toward conversions or used aircraft. Conversions build later The conversion opportunity depends on timing. ATR72-600 passenger feedstock is still limited in the near-term conversion window, but the pool expands in the early and mid-2030s. The number of ATR72-600 passenger aircraft aged 16 to 20 years rises from 55 in 2028 to 189 in 2030 and more than 300 by 2032. The 21- to 25-year pool begins to scale later, reaching 189 aircraft in 2035 and more than 300 by 2037. In Figure 4, the conversion window becomes much deeper after the early production-led period. This timing points to a gradual P2F ramp that will eventually broaden the ATR72-600F addressable market for capital-sensitive regional, postal and remote operators. While early activity will be limited to launch customers and lessors, scaling repeatable volumes requires mature STCs, MRO slots and competitive acquisition pricing. The main tradeoff is execution risk. If healthy passenger demand delays feedstock release or if operators extend existing fleets, this conversion wave will shift to later in the decade. Capture is narrow The base-case opportunity is concentrated in named channels. FedEx-linked U.S., Caribbean and European feeder demand accounts for the largest share of the forecast. Other express and postal ATR operators add replacement demand, but many of those opportunities lean toward conversions unless contracts support new-build economics. The 737 Classic right-sizing opportunity is also meaningful, but it is route-specific. It applies where older 737 freighters are flying regional sectors with density better matched to ATR72 capacity. Figure 5 shows the base-case allocation by segment, with 66 additions split between production and conversions. FedEx feeder channels account for most of the production-led demand, while conversion demand is spread across express, postal, remote, island and 737 right-sizing segments. The chart also shows why the forecast should be evaluated account by account. ATR capture depends on who pays for the aircraft, which routes need the lift, age of the fleet and whether the operator can absorb new-build or conversion timing. The scenario range reflects these sensitivities. The low case assumes 45 additions, with FedEx backlog delivered, limited follow-on production and slower P2F adoption. The base case reaches 66 additions as conversions ramp with feedstock. The high case reaches 100 additions if FedEx or another anchor customer extends production and non-FedEx conversion adoption scales faster. Outlook The outlook for the ATR72-600F is focused on a disciplined, replacement-driven market rather than broad expansion. New-build production will dominate premium express routes where high utilization justifies the capital cost, while conversions will provide a lower-cost replacement path as feedstock scales into the 2030s. However, execution timeline risks persist if operators choose to extend current fleets, truck marginal routes or retain narrowbody lift. While the firm FedEx backlog anchors the near term, the ATR's sustained upside over the next decade will hinge on converting this highly localized replacement demand into committed orders through disciplined account targeting and stable conversion delivery.
