Connecting three continents: Egypt’s rise as an air freight hub

Egypt’s air freight sector is entering a decisive decade of expansion. Though it represents less than 1% of the country’s total freight volume, it accounts for a large share of trade value and export competitiveness. Air cargo is central to Egypt’s Vision 2030 strategy, with the goal to transform the country into a multimodal logistics and production hub connecting Africa, the Middle East and Europe. In 2023, Egyptian airports handled roughly 338,600 tonnes of cargo, nearly back to pre-pandemic levels and 28% above 2020. The broader air transport industry contributes about $21 billion, or 5.3% of GDP, underlining the sector’s macroeconomic relevance. According to IMARC Group , the dedicated air freight market was valued at $958 million in 2024 and is forecast to reach between $1.4 billion to $1.5 billion by 2030, equivalent to a 6% CAGR, outpacing the 5.1% growth projected for Egypt’s overall logistics market. What’s driving Egypt’s air cargo expansion Egypt’s geographic position remains its most powerful competitive advantage. Cairo International Airport (CAI) serves as the central hub for air cargo flows connecting Europe, the Gulf and the African continent, effectively bridging major east-west and north-south trade lanes. The national mandate, formalized under Vision 2030, explicitly targets the transportation sector. This strategy guarantees a 15% annual increase in infrastructure spending through the decade to ensure continuous capacity expansion and modernization. Current and projected growth in air freight capacity are underpinned by several critical factors: Infrastructure upgrades: Investments include development of new cargo terminals, expansion of cold-chain warehousing facilities and implementation of advanced digital ground-handling systems at major hubs like CAI and Borg El Arab. Diversification of demand: Growth is driven by expanding volumes across multiple sectors, such as exports (particularly perishables and textiles), a significant increase in imports (pharmaceuticals, high-value electronics and machinery), and the sustained global surge in e-commerce. Policy and regulatory alignment: The government is actively modernizing regulatory frameworks to improve efficiency. This is centered on the Advanced Cargo Information system and the NAFEZA single-window platform, which standardizes data exchange and streamlines pre-clearance and risk screening processes. Private sector engagement: The introduction of airport concession programs for facilities including Cairo, Sphinx and Hurghada is designed to attract substantial foreign direct investment and integrate international best-practice standards into operational management. Building capacity: Egypt’s airports and airline network CAI handles nearly two-thirds of Egypt’s total air freight traffic and remains the country’s dominant hub. Expansion of the Cairo Cargo City complex and Terminal 4 will double handling capacity, add automated screening and strengthen perishables and pharma capabilities. Secondary airports such as Sphinx, Capital International and Borg El Arab are being positioned for domestic and regional cargo, helping decongest CAI and extend reach to industrial centers. EgyptAir Cargo continues to dominate the freighter market with a 62% share of total uplift and 74% of handling at CAI. The airline operates A330-200P2F and B737-800SF freighters serving Europe, the GCC and Africa, with plans to expand to six dedicated aircraft by 2030. Meanwhile, integrators and global carriers — including DHL Aviation , UPS Airlines , FedEx , Emirates SkyCargo , Qatar Airways Cargo , Turkish Cargo and Cargolux — keep adding international connectivity and reinforce Cairo’s role as a redistribution hub between continents. Balancing exports, imports, regional trade flows Egypt’s air freight market is defined by high-value, time-sensitive cargo and increasingly balanced two-way trade flows. Air freight serves as a bridge between Egypt’s industrial and agricultural output and its reliance on imported machinery, electronics and consumer goods. Together, these patterns highlight Egypt’s growing importance as both an origin and redistribution hub across Africa, the Gulf and Europe. Exports remain diverse and strategically positioned as observed in Figure 2. The largest outbound volumes move to the United States (~61,000 tonnes), Saudi Arabia (~56,000 tonnes) and the UAE (~48,000 tonnes) account for nearly half of total exports. These are followed by key European markets such as the United Kingdom (~28,000 tonnes), Netherlands (~18,000 tonnes), and Germany and Italy (~7,000 tonnes each). Most shipments consist of perishables, pharmaceuticals, textiles and electronics, reflecting Egypt’s participation in high-value global supply chains. Shorter-haul connections to the Gulf and Africa — notably Bahrain, Oman, Jordan, Ghana and Libya — highlight Egypt’s emerging role as a regional express and redistribution hub, while growing ties to China and India signal increasing East–West integration. (Source: Cargo Facts Consulting Analysis of Egypt’s air trade data) Imports show a complementary profile dominated by China (~69,000 t), Poland (~35,000 t), Italy (~25,000 t), the U.S. (~17,000 t) and Syria (~14,000 t), as seen in Figure 2 below. These flows reflect Egypt’s dependence on air shipments of electronics, industrial components, pharmaceuticals and high-value consumer goods. European partners supply machinery and automotive parts, while regional trade with Turkey and Saudi Arabia supports textile and processed-goods imports. Smaller volumes from Japan, Korea and Taiwan embed Egypt within Asia’s technology value chain. Figure 2 - Egypt’s Air Import Volumes by Destination (Tonnes, 2024)

As Egypt increases its manufacturing base and integrates into the African Continental Free Trade Area, this balance will strengthen. The combination of origin exports, inbound supply chains and regional transshipment flows reinforces Egypt’s evolution from a secondary market into a strategic tri-continental air cargo gateway. New growth frontiers: Pharma logistics and e-commerce Two segments are reshaping Egypt’s air freight profile: pharmaceutical logistics and e-commerce. Pharma and cold-chain logistics are expanding rapidly, supported by new temperature-controlled facilities at CAI and local vaccine-manufacturing initiatives. These shipments are high-yield, resilient to economic cycles and align with Egypt’s export diversification goals. E-commerce has become a transformational driver. The market’s gross merchandise value exceeded $10 billion in 2024 and is projected to nearly double by 2030, growing at 10% to 13 % CAGR. Online retail’s dependence on speed and reliability increases demand for express and small-parcel air shipments. Integrators such as DHL, Aramex and Jumia Logistics already operate dedicated fulfillment centers near Cairo, while new digital freight platforms are improving visibility and delivery accuracy. Over time, this structural shift will generate steady, smaller-lot, high-margin air cargo volumes. Challenges, competition, road to 2030 Egypt’s outlook is broadly positive but not without challenges. Ground-handling capacity and automation remain uneven outside of Cairo, and currency volatility continues to pressure import costs and airline yields. Regional competitors — including Dubai, Doha, Istanbul and Addis Ababa — enjoy larger networks and lower unit costs, forcing Egypt to differentiate through reliability, efficient customs and multimodal integration rather than scale alone. Geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea and Eastern Mediterranean also pose periodic risks to trade routes. Yet these disruptions can create an upside for air freight as shippers seek faster, more predictable alternatives for time-critical cargo. Sustained infrastructure investment, regulatory modernization and digital execution will determine whether Egypt can transform volatility into lasting opportunity. By 2030, the air freight market is projected to reach between $1.4 billion to $1.5 billion, supported by steady 6% annual growth and greater integration into global value chains. Cargo volumes could exceed 400,000 tonnes per year, led by perishables, pharmaceuticals, electronics and express parcels. Cairo International Airport is set to consolidate its role as North Africa’s leading air logistics hub, supported by a growing network of regional airports and free-zone logistics parks that extend the country’s reach and resilience. The defining features of Egypt’s next-generation air cargo ecosystem will be digitalization, multimodality and private sector participation. The shift toward electronic documentation, blockchain-enabled visibility and sustainable aviation practices will improve efficiency and resilience. With rising investment, modernized regulation and strong demand for high-value and time-sensitive goods, Egypt’s air freight transformation is no longer a distant ambition but a measurable reality. The next five years will be decisive, translating infrastructure upgrades and digital reform into faster, smarter and more reliable operations. If executed effectively, Egypt will emerge by 2030 as North Africa’s premier air freight gateway — connecting trade flows across three continents and shaping regional logistics.
