From runway to doorstep: How airlines are redefining e-commerce delivery

The explosive growth of e-commerce and the rise of direct-to-consumer (D2C) and business-to-consumer (B2C) models are fundamentally reshaping global logistics. As more brands bypass intermediaries to control the full customer journey, the demand for faster, more flexible shipping solutions has surged.

With global retail e-commerce sales projected to exceed $ 6. 4 trillion by 2025 and U.S. parcel volume expected to hit 23 billion the same year, traditional ground networks are under immense pressure to keep pace. Enter the airline s, o nce focused solely on cargo in belly holds and freighters, passenger carriers are now reimagining their role in the supply chain by leveraging their expansive networks to offer direct, door-to-door delivery services. From Delta ’s Deliver Direct to Emirates ’ Courier Express, the skies are becoming the new fast lanes of e-commerce.

Deliver Direct (Delta Airlines)

In January 2024 , Delta Cargo launched Deliver Direct, a door-to-door delivery service in the United States that was developed in conjunction with SmartKargo, an air cargo management software platform. The service is intended for e-commerce merchants looking to improve their direct-to-consumer shipping solutions. Delta leans on dedicated capacity on its over 2,500 daily flights to offer service to all corners of the U.S . Delta states that it offers faster time-and-transit than traditional integrators, but since it currently offers only two-day and three-to-five-day service , that statement appears to be incorrect.

Delta states that it is working toward next-day service but has not stated when that will be available . Delta’s service can add redundancies to existing supply chains. The main benefit the carrier promotes is z one - skipping, which reduces transit times and costs by bypassing intermediate shipping zones commonly used by large carriers in the U.S. When shipping with traditional carriers and integrators, parcel freight is initially consolidated based on its regional destination. Upon reaching a hub, it must be transferred to the spoke before reaching its destination.

Putting a parcel on a Delta passenger flight is a more direct shipping method that avoids traditional zone-based pricing fees and eliminating the need for regional zones and significantly reducing warehouse and distribution center expenses. Analyzing Delta’s financial statements, it does not break out revenues derived from DirectDeliver . H owever it should be noted that Delt a’s first-quarter cargo revenue was $208 million , up 17% from Q1 202 4 .

Emirates ’ Courier Express

In April , Emirates launched Emirates Courier Express, a premium door-to-door delivery service leveraging its global network and more than 250 aircraft for faster, more direct cross-border shipments. Like Direct Deliver, Emirates Courier Express offers passenger-style logistics where packages travel directly from origin to destination, skipping traditional hub-and-spoke delays.

Emirates offers real-time tracking and advanced technological integration that its customers have grown to expect from its other cargo products. The direct nature of cargo routing offers speed with the a verage delivery time under 48 hours , with next-day and two-day premium options available.

Emirates is heavily promoting the global reach of this product , however it has chosen to start on a smaller scale, trialing the service in seven markets , including the United Arab Emirates , Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, South Africa and the United Kingdom. The map below assumes that Emirates Courier Express service will be offer ed to every destination in the seven countries .

In May 2025, Emirates unveiled an A380 sporting a special livery promoting Emirates Courier Express. Taking inspiration from wrapping paper, the aircraft’s nose and fuselage appear to be wrapped in brown kraft paper, with tears in the wrapping exposing the expected UAE flag on the tail with the Emirates Courier Express logo replacing the traditional Emirates logos on the fuselage and four engines .

Although Emirates Courier Express would not have factored into the 2024 - 2025 financial performance, Emirates hopes to grow in an impressive year. In financial year that ended in March , Emirates SkyCargo carried 2.3 million tonnes of goods, up 7 % from the previous year. Revenue grew to $4.38 billion, contributing 13 % of total airline revenue.

Azul Cargo Express (Azul Brazilian Airlines)

Azul Brazilian Airlines has rapidly emerged as a dominant force in Brazil’s logistics industry by leveraging its extensive domestic passenger network to deliver B2C e-commerce packages . Through a strategic partnership with SmartKargo, launched in January 2020, Azul transformed its Azul Cargo Express unit into a powerful logistics platform capable of processing 300,000 to 400,000 shipments per month and reaching 96% of the Brazilian population.

By integrating SmartKargo’s end-to-end, API-driven e-commerce solution — featuring real-time tracking, warehouse management and seamless airline system integration — Azul was able to capitalize on underutilized belly cargo capacity and create a national franchise-based network. This transformation enabled Azul to rival major integrators like FedEx and UPS and become a critical logistics provider during the pandemic. With over 300 retail stores and coverage of more than 4,200 cities, Azul now delivers over 1.5 million shipments monthly. Its logistics revenue more than doubled from approximately $ 91 million in 2019 to about $ 209 million in 2021.

The company forecasts up to 30% revenue growth in 2025, driven by the addition of new Airbus A321 freighters and international route expansion. E-commerce now accounts for 37% of Azul Cargo’s revenue, expected to grow to 50% by year end. This aggressive and innovative strategy has positioned Azul as the “FedEx of Brazil,” fundamentally reshaping the national logistics landscape.

MAS Cargo MH Door-to-Door (Malaysian Airlines)

In October 2021, MASkargo , the air cargo logistics arm of Malaysia Airlines , announced the launch of its door-to-door delivery service MH Door-to-Door (MHD2D). This service was launched as a “ p artnership of e xcellence ” between DHL Express and MASkargo. However, unlike traditional DHL operations , it appeared that DHL would handle the pickup and delivery of products, with packages then traveling on Malaysia Airlines passenger aircraft. At the time of writing , it appears that this service may be suspended as no information can be found on the MASkargo website and the MHD2D.com site shows under maintenance.

Port-to-Door (Philippine Airlines)

In 2023, Philippine Airlines also launched a similar service coined Port-to-Door Service , with “p ort ” referring to six airports in key cities in the Philippines : Manila, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu, Cagayan and Davao . This is not to be confused with services offered by marine shippers. For its service , Philippine Airlines has partnered with Grab Express and Lalamove , however both service providers rely upon motorcycles for deliveries, so package size is limited to a maximum of 50 pounds and 20 inches on each side.

As airlines pivot into the parcel logistics space, their door-to-door delivery services signal a bold shift in how e-commerce fulfillment can be executed. These airline-driven solutions — capitalizing on speed, reach and underutilized cargo capacity — offer viable alternatives to traditional integrators, especially in markets where infrastructure gaps persist or regional delivery models fall short.

Whether it’s Delta targeting zone-skipping within the U.S., Emirates showcasing global potential or Azul redefining logistics across Brazil, the initiative s reflect a larger trend . A viation is not just about transporting people or goods anymore — it’s about delivering convenience, control and competitiveness in a rapidly evolving digital economy.
