Canada joins zero-carbon tech coalition

Canada is the most recent addition to the First Movers Coalition, joining 10 government groups and 60-plus companies in the mission to decarbonize high-emitting industries like aviation and shipping. President Joe Biden launched FMC at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, establishing a platform for public and private sectors to work together for cleantech solutions for the shift to net-zero carbon emissions, according to a Jan. 18 release. FMC members commit to supporting clean technology existence, transparency and scale for net-zero operations, developing best practices and tracking the progress of this work, according to FMC’s website. Photo/© Can Stock Photo / Josefhanus[/caption] “A net-zero carbon emissions world is only attainable if we bring key technologies to commercial scale,” Francois-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s minister of innovation, science and industry, said in the release. Joining the FMC also elevates Canadian cleantech entrepreneurs and businesses looking to get a foothold in the net-zero conversation and funding, according to the release. Besides Canada, FMC’s government partners include Denmark, India, Italy, Japan , Norway, Germany, Singapore, Sweeden, the U.K. and the U.S. FMC private partners in the aviation sector include Apple, Airbus , Boeing , Delta Air Lines , Deutsche Postal DHL Group , FedEx and United Airlines . Other high-emitting industrial sectors in the coalition include aluminum, chemicals, concrete, shipping, steel and trucking, which create about a third of the world’s carbon emissions. Sustainable tech needed The International Air Transport Association established the goal of net-zero carbon emissions from its member airlines by 2050. Many IATA members, including Delta and United, have goals to reduce their carbon footprint by 2030 as well, increasing the need for sustainable aviation technology solutions. Other initiatives include lighter transport materials like pallet nets or using electric ground handling vehicles . Some airlines rely on carbon offset programs to balance carbon emissions.
